How to Specify Slit-Coil Edge and Burr Direction
A finished width does not tell a slitting partner which burr side may touch your next operation. Send an orientation sketch and a measurable, order-specific edge criterion.
Start at the Next Tool Contact
Show where the slit strip will go after delivery. A forming roll, stamping die, guide, visible face or weld preparation may meet different sides of the strip. Mark the face and edge that matter to that operation before asking for a burr direction. A material grade or target width does not reveal the downstream contact path. The responsible process engineer should identify the surface and edge on a drawing so the slitting request can be checked against the actual production sequence.
Contact face
Mark the face that runs against a tool or remains visible on the finished part.
Critical edge
Identify the edge that meets a guide, joint or later operation.
Process owner
Have the responsible engineer approve the strip orientation used in the order.
Draw the Face, Edge and Rewind Direction
Provide a simple sketch with the named top and bottom face, left and right edge as seen in the agreed travel direction, slit direction and required burr side. Add the finished daughter-coil width, coil presentation and label location. A coil can be turned or rewound after slitting, so the drawing must explain how the usable face and named edge will still be recognized at receipt. Ask the actual processor to return its proposed winding and packing orientation before confirming the order; a label by itself is not a physical edge inspection.
Mark the travel view
Fix the direction from which left and right edge are named.
Mark the usable face
Show which face meets the next tool or becomes the visible surface.
Confirm the rewind
Ask how daughter coils will be oriented and labeled after processing.
Do Not Mix Burr, Width and Camber
Define each observed condition separately. A burr is a raised feature at a cut edge, so a controlled burr needs an agreed side, measurement position and method. Width is a dimension across the strip. Camber concerns deviation of its path rather than a change in measured width. Chipped edges or coating damage may require another visual criterion. Calling all of these a clean edge leaves the processor and receiving team unable to tell which result matters to the line.
| Check | What to define on the order |
|---|---|
| Burr | Direction, location, method and agreed criterion |
| Width | Finished strip measurement and tolerance basis |
| Camber | Measurement length and acceptance basis |
| Edge damage | Visible defect type and inspection location |
Use the main slitting guide for width, yield and broader processor inputs. This page owns the orientation and separate edge-acceptance decision.
Agree a Measurable and Feasible Edge Result
If the edge affects tool life, forming, welding or appearance, describe the required result in terms the actual processor can measure. Agree the method, location, sampling across the slit mult and how a nonconforming coil will be identified. Where a rounded, deburred or otherwise special edge is wanted, ask for separate feasibility and pricing rather than assuming it is part of ordinary slitting. No universal burr limit or sampling percentage follows from the product name. Keep the criterion blank until the application owner and processor accept the same drawing and inspection basis.
- CriterionWrite the edge feature and its agreed inspection method and position.
- SamplingAgree which daughter coils and locations will be checked.
- ExceptionSpecify how a rejected or uncertain edge is separated and resolved.
Verify the Daughter Coil Before It Enters the Line
At receipt, link each daughter coil to the original processing order, requested width, usable face, named edge, winding presentation and any reported edge check. Compare the label and the accessible strip section with the approved orientation sketch before feeding the next process. If a mismatch is found, preserve the pack, label, coil identity, photographs and measurement position. A single observation may identify a possible issue but does not establish the condition of every coil in the lot. Resolve the affected material against the agreed sampling and exception rule.
Match identity
Connect the daughter-coil label to the slit mult and order.
Check orientation
Compare face, edge and winding with the approved sketch.
Preserve evidence
Record location and method if an edge concern appears.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Define the edge feature that matters, its side, measurement method, inspection location and the processor's accepted criterion.
No. They describe different properties. Put each required check on its own line so an edge concern is not hidden by a width result.
Do not assume it is. Ask the actual processing partner to confirm the edge route, inspection method, price and delivery condition for the order.
