Steel Pipe and Tube Ordering: Route, Dimensions and Acceptance
“Steel pipe” alone does not define the use, manufacturing route or finished dimensions. Start with the project requirement, then specify the material, section, wall, length, ends and evidence that the order needs. Welded, seamless, pre-galvanized and after-forming galvanized routes should be quoted and checked as distinct options.

Begin With the Intended Use
Describe what the tube will do: structural support, fabrication input, a conveying line or another controlled application. Attach the drawing or project specification and identify the responsible engineer where service conditions require approval. The product standard, design code, inspection scope and permissible joining route depend on that use; a dimensional designation alone does not establish suitability for a pressure system.
If the service is regulated, safety-critical or subject to a project code, put those requirements in the RFQ and request a route-specific offer. Do not replace an engineering approval with a generic supplier page. Product pages describe the available stainless, carbon and galvanized form discussions, while this guide helps you prepare the decision before choosing one.
State Welded or Seamless as a Route
Name the material family and grade, the governing product standard and edition, and whether the required route is welded or seamless. If both could be considered, request separate quotations and have the project authority evaluate each against the actual service requirement. A welded seam, permitted weld procedure, required tests and dimensional range are order-specific questions; “pipe” and “tube” do not settle them.
Ask the supplier to identify the offered manufacturing route and any deviation from the specified route in writing. Do not assume that a seamless alternative is available for every grade, section or schedule, or that a lower-cost welded alternative is acceptable for an application that specified seamless. The comparison belongs to the project criteria and the actual quotation.
Separate the Galvanizing Sequence
For galvanized tube, say whether the material is galvanized before forming or the finished tube is galvanized after forming. These sequences raise different questions about weld areas, cut ends, internal surfaces and how the final coating is checked. Record which surfaces need protection and whether cut or fabricated ends need an agreed treatment.
Ask for the proposed route, coating basis and acceptance method on the quote. Do not treat a pre-galvanized section and an after-forming galvanized section as interchangeable merely because both are described as galvanized. The required result and any repair or end treatment must be specified for the actual use.

Write the Finished Tube Line Item
For a round tube, state outside diameter, wall, cut length and quantity. For a square or rectangular section, state both outside side dimensions, wall, corner or profile requirement if critical, length and count. Name the dimensional standard and edition used for the actual form. A nominal size by itself may describe a different outside dimension under another system, so include the drawing dimension and unit.
Specify straightness or length tolerance only when the project has a defined acceptance basis. Describe the end condition: plain, prepared for joining, deburred, capped or another drawing-specific finish. Mark any secondary cutting or fabrication separately from raw tube supply. Add destination, bundle size constraints and handling requirements so the supplier can quote the same finished line item you intend to receive.
When a pipe is specified by NPS or DN, include the applicable schedule or wall and confirm the resulting actual outside diameter from the named standard. Ask for the unit-weight calculation basis separately from the quantity to be shipped. For galvanized tube, confirm how coating and fabrication affect the quoted and weighed quantity.
Agree Tests, Marking and Documents
Identify which tests or examinations the product standard and project specification require for the selected route, plus any additional inspection the order needs. State the document type, scope and responsible party in the RFQ; do not assume that a general-use tube automatically receives a particular test, witness inspection or certificate. Ask for written confirmation of availability before making it an acceptance condition.
Define how a bundle or length will be marked and how the mark links to a heat, lot or batch record and the agreed document. If lengths will be cut or mixed in stock, plan identifier transfer before their labels are lost. The related mill test certificate guide helps distinguish document types; the quality page sets out the site’s order-specific approach rather than a universal test package.
Receive Against the Accepted Order
At arrival, match the shipment, bundle count, identifiers and document list to the accepted line items. Record visible coating and end condition before unbundling; check representative sections, wall and lengths by the method and sampling plan agreed for the order. Keep dated photos, labels and measurements tied to the affected bundles.
If a size, route, coating condition, document or test record does not match, isolate the affected material and compare the exact requirement with the observed result. Notify the seller under the agreed process before cutting or installing it. An exception may require further inspection or an engineering disposition; this guide does not establish an automatic pass, failure or commercial remedy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Usually not. Include the applicable dimensional standard, actual outside section or diameter, wall, length, end condition and quantity on the order line.
That decision belongs to the responsible project authority. Compare the alternatives against the specified use, product standard, test scope and service conditions, and request separate route-specific offers.
No. State whether the material was coated before forming or the finished section is coated afterward, and define the coating and end acceptance basis.
No. The project design requirements, applicable product and design standards, inspection scope and approval must be addressed for that service.
