Galvanized Pipe Size and Weight: Order by Actual Geometry
Translate NPS/DN, actual outside diameter, wall, length and unit-weight basis into a verifiable pipe order.
Identify pipe route and standard
Name the pipe or tube product standard and manufacturing route before selecting a size table. A nominal pipe size is a designation, not a measured outside diameter; a tube described directly by outside diameter and wall may follow a different convention. State whether the product is galvanized before forming or after fabrication, since that affects what coating evidence you need. A drawing or marked sample is safer than a size nickname alone.
Translate nominal size to actual OD
For a standard pipe enquiry, give the nominal designation and schedule or wall requirement, then ask for the corresponding actual outside diameter under the named standard. For a tube enquiry, state outside dimension and nominal wall directly. Keep the tolerance and measurement location on the order. A nominal designation must never be inserted into a geometric calculation as if it were the outside diameter.
Pipe standard and route
State the required pipe standard and route and how it will be verified for this order.
Nps/dn versus actual od
State the required nps/dn versus actual od and how it will be verified for this order.
Wall designation
State the required wall designation and how it will be verified for this order.
Length
State the required length and how it will be verified for this order.
State wall and length
State nominal wall or schedule, ordered length, tolerance basis and end finish separately. A pipe offered under a nominal designation still needs an actual wall and length in the purchase order. If it is cut to length, agree whether the measured length is before or after end preparation and how bundles are counted. The coating route and end treatment also belong on the order line.
- LengthState the required length and how it will be verified for this order.
- Unit-weight conventionState the required unit-weight convention and how it will be verified for this order.
- Galvanized coating basisState the required galvanized coating basis and how it will be verified for this order.
Calculate theoretical weight on an agreed basis
A theoretical steel mass starts with the area of the outer circle minus the inner circle, multiplied by ordered length and the density basis agreed for the steel. The inner diameter follows from the actual outside diameter and the wall; coating and manufacturing tolerances can change the shipped mass. Ask whether the quote is based on theoretical or scale weight and how bundles are counted. A theoretical value is a comparison tool, not proof of delivered quantity.
Check shipped quantity and documents
Check the pipe marking, measured geometry, length, coating route and lot documents against the purchase order. If payment is by weight, record the weighing method and what packaging or coating is included. Request the actual standard edition, test record and end condition needed by the application. Do not assume that a general structural or mechanical tube is qualified for pressure service.
