Composition
The composition figures below for 304 (1.4301) and 304L (1.4307) are typical or representative values, not specification limits. Outokumpu typical values and BSSA composition guide entries are listed separately.
| Source | Designation | C (% by mass) | Cr (% by mass) | Ni (% by mass) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outokumpu typical composition | Core 304/4301 | 0.04 | 18.1 | 8.1 |
| Outokumpu typical composition | Core 304L/4307 | 0.02 | 18.1 | 8.1 |
| BSSA composition guide | 1.4301 | 0.07x | 18 | 8 |
| BSSA composition guide | 1.4307 | 0.030x | 18 | 8 |
In the BSSA composition guide, x indicates a maximum. The BSSA Composition Guide is intended to represent the composition only; it does not show the specified or typical compositions of commercially available steels. Its figures are representative of the grade, not typical. The Outokumpu figures are typical composition values, not specified limits.

304 vs 304L
304L is a low-carbon alternative to 304; the lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation as a result of heat input, for example during welding, giving improved resistance against intergranular corrosion. 304L is suitable for a wide variety of applications that require good formability and weldability.
