PPGI vs PPGL: Choose the Prepainted Substrate

Choose the prepainted substrate for a stated use without claiming PPGI and PPGL have identical performance.

01

Define the finished use

Write down the finished use and any project specification before picking a prepainted substrate. PPGI and PPGL are both painted steel products, but their metallic-coated bases differ. A roof panel, an appliance part and a general stock coil may have different forming, appearance and exposure requirements. Neither acronym alone settles suitability, and a color choice does not select the substrate.

02

Compare substrate definitions

For PPGI, identify the galvanized substrate and its coating designation. For PPGL, identify the aluminium-zinc-coated substrate and its own designation. The paint system sits above that metallic layer and must be specified separately. Ask which standard and edition governs the proposed base, how the metallic coating is declared and which face receives the visible topcoat. A partner's listed product range is not ZIVO's available combination.

  • Metallic-coated substrate

State the required metallic-coated substrate and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Organic coating

State the required organic coating and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Forming route

State the required forming route and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Exposure

State the required exposure and how it will be verified for this order.

03 · Specify the paint system

Specify the paint system separately

Treat the paint system as a separate decision from either metallic-coated base. Name primer, exposed topcoat and reverse coat, then state the physical color reference and gloss or texture requirement. A PPGL request with a galvanized-base paint specification copied from a PPGI line is incomplete. Ask the proposing supplier to identify the exact combination it can supply and the test or sample used to approve the visible face.

  • ExposureState the required exposure and how it will be verified for this order.
  • Order standardState the required order standard and how it will be verified for this order.
  • Sample and test basisState the required sample and test basis and how it will be verified for this order.
04 · Resolve forming and exposure

Resolve forming and exposure questions

Compare the proposed material under the actual forming and exposure conditions. Ask for the partner's data on bending or adhesion when your profile requires it, and separate material evidence from a roof assembly claim. Edge condition, fasteners, installation and maintenance can affect the finished use; neither acronym alone settles those decisions or creates a universal service-life ranking.

Send a route-specific RFQ

For a comparable enquiry, send the same delivered form, dimensions, substrate requirement, metallic-coating basis, paint layers, color sample, quantity and destination to each supplier. ZIVO checks PPGI and PPGL forms through partners order by order; no fixed size, paint or warranty is implied by this comparison.

  1. Send the order basis

Include use, drawing, form and material system.

  2. Confirm the offer

Check each proposed difference, test and delivery term.

  3. Keep the receipt record

Match labels, documents and visible condition to the agreed order.
