Steel Bar Ordering for Machining: From Part to Stock
The finished part drawing tells you what the machine must produce, but it rarely defines the stock to buy. Choose the material and section, confirm the delivery condition, then calculate allowance and length from the actual process. Put critical geometry, marking and document requirements on the stock order so the quote and receipt can be compared.

Start With the Finished Part
Attach the current part drawing and note the features that will be turned, milled or ground. Separate final part dimensions from stock dimensions. Identify the clamping and datum surfaces, machining sequence, heat treatment or finishing steps, and the number of acceptable parts required. These choices determine where material must remain for machining and where a surface or straightness defect would matter.
Do not copy an allowance from a table for a different stock process. A forged blank, a hot-rolled bar and a cold-drawn bar may start in different conditions. If the process plan is not settled, request a route and stock-size option for engineering review rather than treating the first quoted size as final.
Choose Material and Section
Specify the material family, full grade designation and applicable product standard with edition. Choose the section from the part envelope and machining method: round for turned parts, or square or hexagonal where those shapes suit the process. Check whether the requested section is within the supplier’s confirmed route; do not turn a flat-bar drawing into a default bar offer without separate confirmation.
Give a complete section dimension and intended stock length rather than “standard bar.” The related stainless steel and carbon steel bar pages describe their approved order routes. A material designation from another system should not be accepted as an automatic substitute; ask the responsible engineer to compare the actual requirements.
Lock the Delivery Condition
State whether hot-rolled, cold-drawn or another delivery condition is required, and tie that condition to the applicable standard and quotation. The same grade name does not settle surface condition, dimensional allowance, straightness or later machining behavior. If a treatment or special condition is important to the part, put it in the drawing or RFQ rather than assuming it follows the grade.
Ask the seller to state the offered condition and any proposed route change explicitly. Compare its dimensional and surface basis with the planned first operation. This is particularly important when the machining plan relies on a specific amount of stock removal or on how the bar will be held in a machine.

Derive Stock Size and Cut Length
For each critical face, determine the material to remove from the actual starting section to reach the finished part. Include tool approach, clamping, workholding, facing of cut ends and any final grinding or treatment sequence. Record whether the allowance is radial, per face or total across the section; an unlabeled allowance can be interpreted in more than one way.
Use the chosen supplier route and its confirmed size offer to check that the starting bar leaves enough material where needed. Agree the cut length, end condition and whether any cutting is part of the quotation. Keep long-stock and pre-cut alternatives as separate lines if both are being priced. No single allowance percentage or stock-size increment works for every part.
Specify the Checks That Protect Machining
If straightness, ovality, surface condition or end squareness affects clamping or finished yield, define the applicable limit and measurement method in the order. A nominal section tolerance alone does not prove a bar will meet a separate straightness need. Identify any critical surface location and agree sampling, handling and dispute evidence before shipment.
Ask how bundles and cut lengths will be marked and how a lot or heat identifier will connect to the ordered document. If material is cut into shorter pieces, decide how that identity will travel with them. Confirm the document type and availability in the written offer; a certificate is not automatic because a material grade was named. The related quality and certificate pages explain the order-specific evidence path.
Send a Quote-Ready Stock Schedule
Create one line per part or stock variant: drawing and revision, intended use, grade and standard edition, section, delivery condition, starting size, cut length, piece count and destination. Add the machining allowance basis, critical straightness or surface requirements, marking, packaging and requested document type. Identify which requirements are fixed and which are options awaiting engineering decision.
When offers arrive, compare the quoted route and stock dimensions against that same schedule. Ask for written deviations instead of interpreting silence as acceptance. At receipt, match the bar and bundle identifiers to the agreed line, then record dimensions and visible condition under the agreed sampling method. Isolate a disputed lot before machining it and keep the drawing, quote, labels, photos and measurements together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Derive it from the finished drawing, selected stock condition and machining sequence. State whether the value applies per face, radially or across the whole section; do not import a generic percentage.
No. If straightness affects clamping or finished yield, specify the separate acceptance basis and measurement method on the order.
Do not assume so. Ask for a separate route confirmation and written offer for a flat section.
State the required type and traceability scope in the RFQ and confirm availability in the offer before placing the order.
