Steel Coil Slitting: Specify Width, Edge and Rewinding
State the strip your production line can run, not only the master-coil grade and nominal width. Give each finished width, allowed variation, edge acceptance, winding build, packing and traceability requirement. Ask the quoted processor to confirm what it can make and inspect for the actual input coil before treating any value as an agreed service.
Mult
Map every finished width
Edge
Agree burr and orientation
Rewind
Fit your mandrel and lift
Trace
Link daughter to master coil
Define the Finished Strip and Its Next Operation
Describe the downstream line and the strip it needs: steel grade and governing product standard, input-coil thickness and width, desired finished widths, quantity of each width, surface or coating, and which face or edge feeds the machine. Supply a drawing or process sheet when the strip will be formed, stamped or welded.
Identify the master-coil heat and lot information available to the processor. Ask how usable yield, side trim and each daughter-coil length or mass will be reported. If the requested input has not been selected, request a feasibility review rather than assigning a slit width to an unspecified coil.
Make a Width and Tolerance Plan
List every finished width in the slit mult, the quantity required, and the allowed width variation. State where and how width will be measured, including whether the acceptance applies at the start, middle and end of each coil. Ask the processor to review the full mult against the actual mother-coil width, side trim, blade setup and expected yield.
Do not copy a quoted tolerance from another line or material into this order. Confirm the achievable tolerance for the grade, thickness and coil condition in writing, and record any deviation before production. If several daughter coils have different widths, give each its own ID and acceptance line.
Agree Edge and Burr Acceptance
Tell the processor what the downstream guides, tooling, forming or welding operation can accept at the slit edge. Define whether a burr limit, burr direction, edge damage limit or camber criterion is needed, plus the measurement method and inspection points. A request for a 'clean edge' leaves too much for the receiving team to interpret.
Ask who will inspect the edge and how an out-of-limit daughter coil will be identified. If further deburring or edge treatment is required, include it explicitly in the quote and confirm which party performs it. The chosen limits must be feasible for the actual material and slitting setup.

Set Rewind, Coil ID and Build
Give the downstream mandrel ID, maximum acceptable OD and coil weight, winding direction, required orientation of the usable face, and any interleaf or separator requirement. State how the coil will be lifted and loaded. A strip with the correct width can still be unusable if its rewind build does not fit the receiving line.
Ask the processor to confirm the core, tension, edge alignment and package it can deliver for this order. Agree how loose wraps, telescoping or damage will be checked at receipt, and whether partial daughter coils are acceptable.
Protect and Identify Each Daughter Coil
Specify banding, moisture protection, pallet or eye orientation, edge protection and handling labels for the actual transport route. Keep a clear link from each finished coil to its mother coil, heat or lot, slit width and inspection result. State which documents the receiving team needs with the shipment.
Ask which protective materials might touch a coated or appearance-critical surface and whether they are compatible with the next operation. Verify packaging and labels on receipt before the coils enter production; record damage by daughter-coil ID.
Send a Complete RFQ and Assign Service Responsibility
Send the master-coil identity, finished mult and quantities, width and edge limits, rewind dimensions, surface handling, packing, required inspection and delivery point. Ask the quoting party to mark feasible items and exceptions. Record who supplies the master coil, who actually performs the slitting, who inspects the result and who handles a nonconforming coil.
If you want ZIVO STEEL to coordinate a slit-strip order, ask whether it can accept that responsibility for this exact specification and identify the proposed processor in its written offer. Do not assume that every listed width, burr or rewind option is available or that ZIVO operates the processing line. Retain the accepted specification and daughter-coil records with the purchase order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Give each width, required quantity, allowable variation, measurement method and the full mult, then ask the processor to confirm feasibility against the actual master coil.
Describe the downstream operation and state measurable burr, edge-damage or camber criteria where relevant, including inspection points and who records the result.
Provide the receiving mandrel ID, maximum OD and mass, winding orientation, handling method and acceptable build condition for each daughter coil.
