Hot-rolled coil buying guide

Hot-Rolled Coil Surface: Specify Scale, Pickling and Receipt

A grade and thickness do not tell your next process what surface will arrive. Name the delivery condition, critical face and inspection basis before comparing hot-rolled coil offers.

01 · Next operation

Start with the Operation After Delivery

Describe what will happen to the coil before choosing a surface description. A cutting shop, forming line and coating line may each care about different faces, edges and handling marks. Mark the face that must remain usable, where the first processing step occurs, and who will remove scale or prepare the surface if that work is needed. A coil intended for later painting is not automatically paint-ready merely because it is hot rolled. Share the downstream operation with the supplier so the offered delivery condition can be checked against the actual order rather than a vague request for a 'clean' coil.

  • Cutting or welding

Name the first process and any face or edge condition that changes its work.

  • Forming

Identify where handling marks or local surface condition could affect the intended part.

  • Later coating

Name who prepares the substrate and how the surface will be accepted before coating.

02 · Delivery condition

Request the Surface Route the Order Actually Needs

State whether the RFQ seeks an as-rolled surface, a pickled surface, or a pickled-and-oiled delivery condition, then ask for the exact grade and dimension combination offered on that basis. Pickling and oiling are different conditions; an oil film also creates a question for a later cleaning or painting step. Do not assume that every option is available for every coil, that ZIVO operates the processing line, or that a route name alone defines appearance. Review the hot-rolled coil product page for the options ZIVO lists, then ask us to confirm the exact combination for your order.

  1. As-rolled request

Describe the expected next preparation step instead of assuming scale will be removed.

  2. Pickled request

Ask whether scale removal belongs to the quoted delivery condition for this combination.

  3. Pickled and oiled request

Specify the downstream cleaning need and ask for order-specific oil confirmation.

03 · Acceptance clause

Write a Surface Clause That Can Be Inspected

Name the product standard and edition for the coil, the applicable order surface requirement, the critical face or edge, and the stage at which the surface will be observed. If appearance matters, agree a written description or approved representative sample, the area inspected, lighting or cleaning condition, and how findings will be recorded. A plate surface class should not be applied to a coil without checking the selected standard's scope. A dark patch, handling mark or photograph is an observation; rejection needs a criterion the parties actually ordered. No universal defect size, rust grade or scale thickness is supplied here because those values depend on the product and contract.

  • Governing basisRecord the exact standard, edition and any purchase-order surface addition.
  • Where and whenName the face, edge, wrap location and inspection stage.
  • Decision ruleAgree the reference and escalation path before there is a dispute.
04 · Receipt evidence

Record the Coil Condition Before Processing Changes It

At receipt, preserve the package, coil label and transport condition before unwinding or cleaning. Map each observation to the coil identifier, outer or inner wrap if safely accessible, edge or face, clock position and approximate area. Photograph with a scale and orientation, then keep the purchase order, material document and opening date with the record. Outer-wrap appearance alone cannot describe every inner wrap. If the ordered criterion is unclear or a mark may have arisen during transport or handling, keep the affected coil identifiable and agree a joint inspection stage before processing removes the evidence. The general receiving guide covers the wider unloading and document workflow.

  1. Package first

Save labels, wrap protection and transport observations before opening.

  2. Map the finding

Record the same coil, face, edge and wrap area another inspector can locate.

  3. Hold a dispute

Keep affected material traceable until the agreed rule and observation stage are settled.

05 · RFQ line

Send an RFQ Line That Connects Surface to Use

Use the same order basis when comparing offers. State the next process and critical face alongside the coil route; ask the partner to mark any condition it cannot supply. The table is an RFQ checklist, not a promise that every row is available in every grade or size.

Order fieldWhat to state or request
Product identityGrade, hot-rolled coil standard and edition, and the surface route you want quoted
Coil and volumeThickness, width, coil ID, coil weight and quantity from the actual offer
Surface conditionAs-rolled, pickled or pickled-and-oiled request; critical face and next process
AcceptanceApplicable surface clause, sample or written reference, inspection area and stage
Delivery evidenceLabel and material document, packing/protection, photo record and escalation contact

A supplier can only price an exact combination after checking the selected route, volume, protection and documents. If the subsequent coating or cutting contractor needs a special condition, include that requirement in the inquiry and have the responsible engineer approve the acceptance wording before placing the PO.
