Steel Coil Telescoping and Loose Winding at Receipt
A stepped side face or slack band needs a clear condition record before anyone changes restraints or mounts the coil. Identify the coil, document what is visible from a safe position, and route handling and order acceptance to the people authorized to decide.
Name the Visible Condition Without Guessing the Cause
Start with the coil or package ID, heat or lot where marked, PO line and as-delivered position. A stepped or telescoped side face describes turns that project unevenly; loose outer laps, visibly slack bands, core distortion and an out-of-round appearance are different observations. Record the affected side and whether the condition appears near the inner or outer turns. A photo of a stepped edge cannot establish whether winding, transport or handling caused it, or whether the whole coil is unusable. Keep neutral terms so a quality reviewer and line engineer can discuss the same physical feature.
Side-face shift
Describe visible turn displacement and the affected side.
Loose winding
Note outer laps or bands that appear slack without disturbing them.
Core and shape
Record visible core damage or out-of-round appearance.
Record the Original Condition From a Safe Position
Before any approved handling changes the original condition, record the delivery vehicle or support context, wrapping, bands, label, visible side faces and the coil ID. Use an overall view to identify the whole coil and a close view with orientation and a scale where it can be obtained safely. Do not cut a band, remove wrapping, enter a pinch zone or attempt to turn an unstable coil merely to take a better photograph. Any closer observation belongs under the receiving site's approved safety procedure and competent handling decision. Mark a view unavailable when it cannot be captured safely.
- IdentityInclude the coil ID and affected side in the record.
- ContextShow bands, wrap, support and overall coil position.
- LimitState which views could not be obtained safely.
Describe Location and Extent So Another Team Can Review It
State where the visible offset begins and ends around the circumference, which side is affected, whether inner or outer turns appear displaced, and the greatest extent that can be observed safely. Give the reference edge, measurement unit and method when an actual measurement is possible. Record band and core condition separately. If the coil cannot be measured without disturbing it, write unknown rather than an estimated value. Keep each observation beside its photo and coil identity; a close-up without an overall view or scale is difficult to interpret.
| Record field | What to capture | If unavailable |
|---|---|---|
| Coil identity | Mark, PO line, heat or lot if visible | Note the missing mark |
| Location | Side, circumferential area, inner or outer turns | Mark view inaccessible |
| Extent | Observed maximum with reference and unit | Mark unmeasured |
| Restraints and core | Visible band, wrap and core condition | Describe the obscured area |

Separate Line Safety From Contractual Acceptance
Read the PO, agreed packaging and condition clause, and any accepted reference before deciding whether the delivered coil meets the order. Separately, give the actual uncoiler and handling-equipment owner the condition record so they can decide whether the coil may be assessed for line entry under site rules. ID, OD and weight fit are necessary equipment questions, but they do not settle winding stability. No single web offset figure can replace the ordered criterion or a site safety assessment. Record both decisions and their owners; an accepted commercial deviation does not make an unsafe coil safe to handle.
| Decision | Governing input | Responsible owner |
|---|---|---|
| Handling and line entry | Site procedure and actual equipment limits | Equipment or safety authority |
| Order acceptance | PO condition clause and agreed evidence | Contractual quality or procurement authority |
| Cause investigation | Physical and transport evidence, if needed | Assigned investigation owner |
Keep the Affected Coil Identifiable Until Disposition
When a visible condition may affect safe handling or the agreed acceptance rule, keep the coil identifiable and seek an authorized assessment before processing. Send the arrival date, coil and package IDs, overall and scaled photos, observed extent or unknowns, band and core notes, PO clause and line constraints to the named contact. Record the notice path, the person requesting a correction or investigation, and the person allowed to release the coil. Preserve the original evidence before any separately approved rework. Rebanding, rewinding or repair is not assumed to be available from ZIVO; feasibility, risk and terms require their own agreement.
Isolate the record
Keep the affected coil and evidence linked by identity.
Notify
Send observed facts and the governing order clause.
Decide
Record the handling and contractual approvals separately.
Specify Winding and Packing Expectations for the Next Order
For the next RFQ, describe the receiving line, core and ID requirements, OD and weight limits, intended handling route, winding and edge condition of concern, packaging and restraint expectations, and how a visible exception will be documented. Ask the actual sourcing route to confirm what can be supplied and which order clause will govern acceptance. Do not copy a generic telescoping tolerance from another material or coil size. The packing guide covers protective and transport details; this page adds a condition-record and decision path. A clear order makes the later receipt review more consistent without promising that no winding issue can occur.
- Line inputShare the actual uncoiler and handling constraints.
- Condition ruleState the agreed winding, edge and inspection criteria.
- Evidence pathName how exceptions will be recorded and decided.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. It shows the visible condition at the time photographed. A cause decision requires the relevant production, transport and handling evidence, not appearance alone.
There is no universal limit in this guide. Compare the actual coil against its purchase-order condition rule and ask the equipment safety owner whether it can be handled or mounted.
Do not use this page as a band-removal instruction. Keep the condition recorded and follow the site's approved safety and handling procedure with competent personnel.
Any such proposal needs a separate technical, safety and commercial review for that coil. Do not treat repair availability or a later acceptable condition as automatic.

Discuss a coil winding condition
Share the PO condition clause, coil ID, safe arrival photos, observed location and extent, restraint and core notes, and your site's handling decision contact. ZIVO can review the order-specific evidence with its sourcing route.
