PPGI Sheet or Bare Galvanized Sheet: Which to Order?
Begin with the finished part: who needs to supply the visible color, and will cutting or joining happen before or after coating? Those answers determine the order line and the work left after delivery.
Scope of this comparison
Compare the delivered flat product and the work left after delivery. Confirm the substrate, coating system and finished-piece requirements for each actual offer; neither route is automatically equivalent to the other.
Decide When the Finished Part Gets Its Color
Start with the installed appearance, then place cutting, bending, welding and painting in sequence. Bare hot-dip galvanized sheet arrives with a metallic zinc coating but without the specified organic color finish. Factory prepainted galvanized sheet arrives with an agreed paint system on the flat product, before later fabrication. Painting after fabrication is a separate operation whose provider, preparation method and acceptance criteria must be assigned in the project order. Do not buy a painted sheet merely because a color is desired if the later process will disturb the visible face; do not buy bare sheet if the order expects a finished color at receipt.
Bare galvanized delivery
The later color-coating operation, if required, needs its own named owner and specification.
Factory prepainted delivery
The ordered paint stack and approved visible-face reference belong to the material purchase.
Paint after fabrication
Treat surface preparation, coating and final inspection as a separate contracted responsibility.
Write a Bare Galvanized Sheet Order That Names the Next Step
For a bare hot-dip galvanized flat sheet, identify the substrate grade and applicable product standard, the metallic coating designation and test basis, the finished sheet dimensions, and the condition of the intended visible face. State whether the sheet will be cut, joined or painted after delivery and who owns each later operation. A bare sheet quotation does not include an unspecified paint system. If the purchaser instead needs an electro-galvanized route, request that separately rather than treating all galvanized flat products as interchangeable. Ask for the document type and traceability needed to connect received sheets to their order.
- Material basisState grade, standard, metallic coating designation and required evidence.
- Finished formGive sheet size, quantity, surface expectations and piece identification.
- Later paintingName its provider, preparation, specification and acceptance responsibility if applicable.
Specify the Factory Prepainted Sheet as a Layered Product
A PPGI flat-sheet order needs more than a color code. Define the steel substrate and hot-dip metallic coating first, then state the primer, topcoat, backcoat and their applicable test or approval basis. Identify the physical color master, gloss and critical visible side when appearance matters. Add finished dimensions, planned forming and cut sequence, any surface protection, and how sheets must be separated and marked in the package. Ask the source to confirm the complete combination for the actual order; a paint description alone does not establish that every substrate, thickness, color or forming condition is available.
Base and metallic layer
Keep substrate and zinc-coating requirements separate from paint.
Organic finish
Record the approved color sample, paint stack, gloss and visible face.
Fabrication and protection
Share forming steps, final piece size, handling and package needs.

Assign Exposed Edges and Later Fabrication Work
Mark where the finished sheet will be cut, drilled, welded or fastened. Those operations can leave exposed edges or disturb an applied finish, so a project needs an agreed responsibility for edge treatment, touch-up and final appearance inspection. The appropriate treatment depends on the actual coating system, fabrication method and use environment; a general web comparison cannot promise a service life or prescribe one universal repair. At receipt, separate transport marks from later fabrication damage and preserve labels, package condition and an approved face sample before deciding which party must resolve a discrepancy.
- Edges and holesShow their locations and assign any treatment in the drawing or order.
- Joining and formingIdentify later processes that could affect the visible finish.
- Receipt recordKeep the face reference, piece identity, package and damage observations together.
Compare Quotations on the Same Delivered Product
Compare the delivered product and remaining work on the same order basis. Record each line below for the actual offers rather than assuming that a color name or total thickness settles the purchase.
| Order field | Bare hot-dip galvanized sheet | Factory PPGI sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Base and metallic layer | State substrate grade and zinc-coating basis | State substrate grade and zinc-coating basis separately from paint |
| Organic finish | No factory color finish is included in this order line | State primer, topcoat, backcoat and approved color reference |
| Finished piece | Give size, count, face and edge condition | Give size, count, visible face and protection |
| Later work | Name any painter, edge treatment and final appearance check after fabrication | Name any cut-edge treatment, touch-up and final appearance check after fabrication |
| Evidence and pack | Request the route-specific material records, identification and packing | Request material and paint records, identification and face protection |
A thicker total coated sheet does not by itself establish a better substrate or finish, and a lower material quote may leave painting and inspection outside the purchase. Ask each bidder to mark exclusions, order-specific availability, delivery and receipt terms. Choose only after the delivered condition and remaining work have the same definition across bids.
Side-By-Side Comparison
| Attribute | Bare galvanized sheet order | Factory PPGI sheet order | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delivered finish | Metallic zinc coating without a specified factory color finish. | Metallic-coated substrate plus the ordered factory paint system and approved appearance reference. | The purchase order and approved face reference define what must arrive. |
| Material basis | Identify substrate grade, product standard and metallic coating designation. | Identify substrate grade and metallic coating separately from primer, topcoat and backcoat. | Review each offered product standard, coating designation and supporting documents. |
| Work after delivery | Name any separate painter, preparation, edge treatment and final appearance inspection. | Name forming, cut-edge treatment, touch-up and final appearance inspection after fabrication. | The finished-part drawing and responsibility split control the later work. |
| Receipt evidence | Check piece size, identification, zinc-coating records and package condition. | Check piece size, identification, metallic and paint records, visible face and protection. | Agree the document and sample references before comparing quotations. |
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Agree a physical appearance reference where color is critical, and specify the substrate, zinc layer, paint stack, visible face, forming use and acceptance records.
No painting service is implied by the bare sheet order. Name the separate provider, coating process and acceptance responsibility if the finished part must be painted later.
Compare substrate, zinc and paint as separate layers, then include final size, documents, packaging and any remaining painting or edge work on the same delivery terms.
