Prepainted Steel Paint Systems: Selection Checklist

Compare proposed paint systems by project requirements and evidence rather than choosing a generic PE/SMP/HDP/PVDF label.

01

Define environment and forming

Begin with the environment, appearance and forming operation required by the finished product. A paint acronym by itself is not a project specification. Tell the supplier which face is exposed, whether bending or roll forming follows, what color and gloss control matters, and which maintenance conditions the purchaser expects. The proposed system must then be assessed for those conditions.

02 · Ask what each paint

Ask what each paint label means in the offer

Ask each supplier to describe its actual primer, topcoat and backcoat rather than assuming that PE, SMP, HDP or PVDF labels carry one universal film build or quality level. Request the product data sheet, applicable substrate, coating sequence and limits for forming. The named paint family is useful for comparing alternatives, but it does not prove ZIVO stocks every option or that two vendors' systems perform alike.

  • Exposure

State the required exposure and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Required appearance

State the required required appearance and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Primer/top/back coats

State the required primer/top/back coats and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Forming

State the required forming and how it will be verified for this order.

03

Check side-specific film system

Write the film system by face: pretreatment or primer where relevant, exposed topcoat, and reverse-side coating. Ask whether quoted film thickness describes one layer or the combined system and which measurement method applies. A paint family name cannot tell you the reverse-side protection or whether the system will tolerate the planned bend. Keep the substrate and metallic coating on separate lines.

  • FormingState the required forming and how it will be verified for this order.
  • Test methodState the required test method and how it will be verified for this order.
  • Warranty responsibilityState the required warranty responsibility and how it will be verified for this order.
04

Agree tests and appearance

Agree the evidence before purchase: physical color sample, gloss method, film-thickness measurement, forming or adhesion test if relevant, and lot documentation. Tests need a named method, sampling location and acceptance limit. A weathering or corrosion statement from another supplier is not a warranty for this order.

05

Get order-specific confirmation

Ask ZIVO to check the proposed paint and substrate combination with a partner supplier. Include end use, form, base standard, metallic coating, face-specific paint system, color reference, dimensions, quantity and required records. If the partner proposes an alternative, compare it against the same decision criteria before accepting it.

  1. Send the order basis

Include use, drawing, form and material system.

  2. Confirm the offer

Check each proposed difference, test and delivery term.

  3. Keep the receipt record

Match labels, documents and visible condition to the agreed order.
