Steel Thickness at Receipt: Measure the Right Layer and Form
A gauge display is only one reading. Before accepting or disputing a shipment, agree what thickness it measures, where it was taken and which order criterion applies to that form.
Define the Thickness Quantity on the Order Line
Read the purchase order and selected product standard before choosing an instrument. A bare flat product, metallic-coated sheet, painted sheet and pipe wall may require different thickness definitions and acceptance locations. For a prepainted product, keep base-steel thickness, overall metallic-coated sheet thickness and organic dry-film thickness as separately named quantities; a single overall reading cannot be compared automatically with a base-steel nominal value. For a pipe, identify the wall measurement required by its own product standard and order. If the order does not say which quantity it controls, write that gap down and resolve it before declaring a defect.
Flat steel
Name the delivered form and the thickness basis in its product standard.
Coated steel
Keep base, metallic layer and paint film definitions distinct.
Pipe or tube
Specify wall thickness under the ordered pipe or tube standard.
Mark the Physical Point Before Comparing Numbers
Draw a small point map for the received unit. Record the face and distance from the edge on sheet or plate; for pipe, note the seam or formed corner if present; for a coating, identify the measured face and layer. Use only the points allowed by the applicable product standard and purchase order. One edge position or flat-sheet tolerance cannot be carried over to a curved wall or a painted film.
| Delivered form | Point-map question |
|---|---|
| Sheet or plate | Which face and specified zone of the actual piece? |
| Coil-derived cut piece | Which piece and where relative to its processed edges? |
| Pipe or tube | Which circumferential and length position, with seam/corner noted? |
| Coated face | Which layer and visible side does the instrument result represent? |
Do not invent an edge setback from this guide. Add the standard edition and any special PO measurement location to the record so a second inspector can locate the same place.
Record the Instrument Setup That Produced the Reading
Log the instrument type and identifier, reference or calibration check, operator, units and the condition of the measured surface. A contact micrometer, ultrasonic thickness device and coating-film gauge are not interchangeable simply because all display a thickness. Curvature, surface condition, coatings and instrument assumptions can affect whether a method fits the ordered quantity. Ask the inspection party to state the selected method and its current applicable standard where one is required. ZIVO does not claim a universal in-house gauge service; an order can specify agreed inspection and third-party evidence when needed.
- Tool identityRecord type, serial or identifier and operator.
- Reference checkKeep the calibration or reference-piece record relevant to this measurement.
- Surface conditionNote curvature, coating, roughness or preparation that affects the chosen method.
Keep Raw Readings with Unit, Lot and Point Map
Give each inspected unit a traceable identifier: coil and heat, individual sheet or stack, pipe length or lot as appropriate. Record the PO line, selected samples, point map, raw values with units, instrument setup, date and witness. Keep the full set of readings instead of only an average or one extreme result. State the sampling rule before treating a few pieces as evidence about a complete lot. A photograph can show where the probe touched but cannot replace a reading and agreed tolerance basis. This worksheet lets both parties repeat the same check rather than arguing over unrelated numbers.
Identify
Tie every reading to the received piece, coil, heat or lot.
Measure
Keep the point, raw number, unit and instrument setup together.
Sample
Record how many units and points were selected under the agreed rule.
Compare Like with Like and Agree a Neutral Recheck
Compare the recorded result only with the same physical thickness definition, form, position and tolerance in the order and applicable standard edition. If a valid agreed method shows a mismatch, isolate the identified units and preserve their labels and condition for joint disposition. If the parties used different layers, points or instruments, agree one repeatable remeasurement method and witness before rejecting a whole lot. If no order rule exists, resolve the missing definition with your purchasing and engineering teams. On the next RFQ, specify the thickness quantity, test zone, method, sampling basis and dispute owner so the receiving team knows what to check.
- Measured mismatchHold the identified units when the agreed quantity and method fail the ordered rule.
- Method mismatchRecheck the same layer and point using a common setup.
- Order gapAgree the missing criterion before deciding lot disposition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not automatically. First identify which layer or total product thickness the PO and selected standard define, then use a matching method and location.
No universal point map applies to all forms. Use the ordered product standard and edition, identify the exact unit and record the chosen location.
Only an agreed quantity, valid method and location, traceable sample rule and applicable PO criterion can support a lot decision. Keep the raw reading and arrange a joint recheck when the setup is disputed.
