Steel Packing by Form: Coil, Sheet, Pipe, Bar and Profiled Panel
“Export packing” alone does not tell your warehouse what it will count, lift or inspect. Define the delivered form and pack unit first, then ask for an order-specific protection and marking proposal.
Start With the Unit Your Receiver Will Count
Write the deliverable as a coil, individual sheet or plate, supported flat stack, pipe or tube bundle, bar bundle, or nested profiled-panel stack. Ask the supplier to state pieces per pack, dimensions, quoted pack weight and the ID that appears on the packing list. Check that the proposed unit fits the receiver's equipment and storage plan before approving it. A pack suitable for one warehouse is not automatically suitable for another. Coil eye, wrapping and strap choices are a separate decision; use the coil export-packing guide for those details rather than copying them to flat pieces or tubes.
Flat pieces
Count sheets or plates and define the supported stack or individual-piece unit.
Long products
Count pipe, tube or bar lengths per bundle and identify the bundle.
Profiled panels
Confirm profile drawing, nesting orientation and count per stack.
Name the Surface, Edge or End That Needs Protection
Protection follows the finished surface and contact points, not just the material name. Ask whether bright or painted flat pieces need face separation, film, edge guards or a particular face orientation. For pipes and tubes, define whether exposed ends, outside surfaces or bundle contact are critical. For bars, describe cut-end and section-marking needs. For profiled panels, send the profile drawing and identify the visible face and permitted nesting contact. These are questions for an offer; none of these treatments is a standard ZIVO pack or automatically available. Moisture exposure, storage duration and the unpacking method can change the suitable proposal.
| Form | RFQ protection question |
|---|---|
| Sheet or plate | Which face, cut edge and stack contact need protection? |
| Pipe or tube | Are ends, coating and bundle contact sensitive? |
| Bar | How will cut ends and section identity be preserved? |
| Profiled panel | Which face and profile contact points may touch? |
Keep Pack Identity After a Bundle Is Opened
Agree how each physical pack maps to one packing-list line and the purchase order. Depending on the ordered material, the useful mark may include product form, grade, heat or lot, coil or piece ID, size and count. Ask how the remaining pieces will stay identifiable if a bundle is divided before fabrication. A total weight on a packing list cannot identify which sheet or tube was damaged. Do not assume a fixed ZIVO label format; request a label and document map for the actual order.
| Pack ID | Packing-list line | Material ID | Pieces or lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enter proposed mark | Enter line reference | Enter heat, lot or piece mark | Enter actual quoted count |
- Unit markRequest the mark that remains visible on the physical pack.
- Document mapTie that mark to the PO and packing-list line.
- Break-bulk planAgree how identity survives opening and partial use.

Check Every Transfer and the Receiving Site
Describe the sea and inland legs, transfers, expected moisture exposure, container or truck constraints, unloading equipment and storage conditions. Ask who will approve the final pack drawing, restraint method and handling access. Before movement, the responsible safety team must review the actual pack weight, center of gravity, equipment rating and local procedure. This guide does not specify lifting points or rated loads. The supplier's proposed package must be checked against the route and receiver, rather than accepted because it is described as export safe.
Route
List vessel, inland legs, transfers and likely exposure.
Receiver
State handling equipment, access and storage constraints.
Approval
Identify who signs off the actual pack and handling plan.
Agree What Dispatch and Arrival Records Will Show
Where dispatch images are available, request a sequence showing the sealed pack, unit label and count, and placement in the load. A photograph of the outer package does not prove that every inner piece is sound. At the first safe arrival stage, record the shipment reference, package condition, visible moisture or impacts, counts and marks before separating affected units for later inspection. Keep photographs linked to the same pack and packing-list line. Use the coil receiving guide for coil-specific checks. If the package is unstable, the receiving team should follow site safety procedures before closer evidence collection.
- At dispatchAgree which pack, label and load images can be supplied.
- At receiptRecord count, external condition and mark before material checks.
- For exceptionsKeep the affected unit and images tied to its document line.
Send One Packing Line per Delivered Form
For each ordered form, send grade, finish, piece size, proposed pieces per unit and target pack dimensions or weight, then state the surface, edge or end at risk. Add requested separators or protection, route and storage conditions, pack-to-document marks, receiver handling limits and desired dispatch evidence. Ask ZIVO to check the proposed treatment with its partner and return the included and excluded work in the offer. Do not treat a general packaging guide as the agreed pack drawing. ASTM A700 is a guide covering packaging, marking and loading methods for steel products; it does not define a mandatory ZIVO package or replace a purchase-order requirement.

It is a guide to steel packaging, marking and loading methods. The actual purchase contract and agreed pack specification govern the order.
They document visible pack and load condition. Preserve unit identity and use the agreed receipt and inspection criteria to assess the material itself.
