Flat-product receiving guide

Stainless Sheet Flatness: Receiving and Dispute Checks

A visible wave is an observation, not yet a measured order failure. Save the arrival condition, confirm the ordered flatness basis and make the check repeatable.

01 · Arrival condition

Record the Stack Before Moving the Sheets

When a sheet looks wavy or bowed, preserve the condition in which it arrived before cutting, leveling or restacking it. Record the outer package, support points, strapping, transit marks, moisture and the location of the affected sheet within the stack. Photograph the first safe opening with the package and piece identifiers visible. Keep a separate record for comparison sheets that appear sound. These observations establish handling context; a phone image does not by itself measure a flatness tolerance or establish that the full shipment is affected.

  1. Outer pack

Keep labels, support and transit evidence before unpacking changes them.

  2. Stack position

Record where each suspect piece sat and which neighboring pieces were checked.

  3. Piece identity

Map the sheet and pack marks to the order and inspection document.

02 · Actual product

Check Which Flat Product Was Ordered

Read the purchase order and actual supplier route before selecting a flatness rule. A mill flat sheet, a coil-derived cut piece and a plate may have different product-standard scopes, processing histories and ordered options. Confirm the standard and edition, the finished dimensions, any flatness class or project criterion, and whether leveling or cutting occurred before delivery. Do not borrow a coil receipt limit for an individual sheet or a plate tolerance for a cut piece without a scope check. If the order is silent, record that ambiguity before calling the material compliant or nonconforming.

  • Mill flat sheet

Check the actual flat-product standard and ordered form.

  • Cut-to-length sheet

Identify the source and any leveling or cutting stage included in the order.

  • Plate

Use the plate order and its own tolerance basis, not a sheet assumption.

03 · Measure consistently

Set a Measurement Both Sides Can Repeat

Agree how the sheet rests during inspection, whether it is free or restrained, the reference surface, the span and the positions to be measured. Distinguish an edge wave from bow or twist rather than using the word warped for every condition. Record the method, tool and measurement locations together with the sheet identifier and support state. Only then compare the result with the criterion that applies to the ordered form and edition. If either the criterion or setup is missing, ask for a joint measurement plan instead of inventing a limit from a photo or a different steel product.

  • Support and restraintState how the piece is placed and whether loads or clamps affect its shape.
  • Span and positionRecord where the observation or measurement is taken.
  • Applicable criterionUse the order and relevant standard edition for the actual delivered form.
04 · Disposition path

Isolate the Affected Pieces and Decide the Next Check

Connect each suspect sheet to its pack, stack position, heat or lot and measurement record. If the agreed setup shows a result outside the order criterion, segregate those pieces and document the nonconformity for joint disposition. If packaging or handling appears to have changed the shape, preserve that evidence as a separate potential cause. If the ordered criterion or measurement setup is disputed, keep the material identifiable and agree a repeatable check before processing it. Do not condemn a complete lot from one unsupported image, and do not cut a suspect piece before the needed evidence is saved.

  1. Measured mismatch

Segregate identified pieces and compare with the accepted order.

  2. Possible transit damage

Keep package and handling observations with the piece record.

  3. Unresolved basis

Agree the applicable criterion and repeatable setup before a final decision.

05 · Prevent recurrence

Write the Flatness Basis into the Next RFQ

For the next purchase, state the actual stainless sheet route, finished dimensions and piece count, product standard and edition, flatness option or project criterion, and the support and measurement setup expected at receipt. Add the critical flat area, downstream fabrication use, pack support and piece identification if they affect acceptance. Ask the engineer to define any special requirement that exceeds the ordinary material order. A clearer RFQ will not erase every transit or processing risk, but it gives the supplier and receiving team a shared basis for quotation and inspection.
