Hot-Dip vs Electro-Galvanized Steel: Choose a Route

Choose the coating route before writing a sheet or coil order line.

Start with end use

Start with the required use, exposure and downstream operation, not a generic claim that one zinc route is better. A hot-dip galvanized sheet and an electro-galvanized sheet can both be requested, but their substrate, coating designation and surface treatment are specified under different product rules. State whether your drawing calls for a flat piece or coil feedstock and whether paint or forming follows. That context decides which coating route is worth quoting.

02 · Identify the actual coating

Identify the actual coating process

Hot-dip coating is applied through a molten-zinc process; the relevant sheet standard names the substrate and coating requirements for that route. Electrolytic coating is deposited by a different process and its designation may name the mass on each face. Do not transfer a hot-dip designation into an electro order line. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable product standard and edition and to say which face receives which coating requirement.

  • Application exposure

State the required application exposure and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Surface/paint need

State the required surface/paint need and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Governing substrate and coating standard

State the required governing substrate and coating standard and how it will be verified for this order.

  • Per-side coating basis

State the required per-side coating basis and how it will be verified for this order.

03 · Compare specification and acceptance

Compare specification and acceptance fields

Compare offers using the same finished form, substrate grade, coating basis, treatment and visual acceptance. If the surface will be painted, the pretreatment and paint process need their own specification. If a sheet will be cut from coil, the parent-coil record does not by itself prove the final size or edge condition. Ask for lot identity and documents that connect the supplied material to the agreed order.

04 · Choose a route for

Choose a route for the RFQ

Send ZIVO the application, drawing, form, proposed coating route, standard/edition, coating designation and face basis, dimensions, quantity and required records. ZIVO can check the route available for that individual order. Leave numerical coating and delivery promises out of your comparison until a partner's actual offer confirms them.

  1. Send the order basis

Include use, drawing, form and material system.

  2. Confirm the offer

Check each proposed difference, test and delivery term.

  3. Keep the receipt record

Match labels, documents and visible condition to the agreed order.
