Cold-rolled forming decision

Cold-Rolled Coil Stamping Cracks: Separate Material and Process Causes

A split part does not, by itself, identify a bad coil or the right replacement grade. Hold the evidence, compare material and process variables, then agree a trial with the engineer who owns the drawing.

01 · Map the split

Map the First Split Before Choosing Another Grade

Mark the part number and drawing revision, where the split begins, its direction, and the stamping operation at which it first appears. Photograph a retained failed part with orientation and scale, and keep an acceptable part from the same setup if available. A trimmed-edge crack, a drawn-corner split and a tear after a later operation may call for different evidence; none establishes the cause from appearance alone. Record when the first failed piece appeared relative to a coil, blank, die or settings change. This gives your supplier and process engineer a precise question before anyone proposes a different steel grade.

  • Location

Identify the first split on the part drawing and mark its orientation.

  • Operation

Record the first press step at which the defect can be observed.

  • Change point

Log which coil, blank, tool or setting changed just before the failure.

02 · Lot identity

Link Failed and Successful Parts to Their Exact Lots

Keep the coil label, heat or lot number, purchase order and material certificate with retained blanks and stamped parts. Do this for the failed run and for a known successful run when one exists. On both, record grade, product standard and edition, delivery condition, thickness, surface or lubrication condition, and blank orientation. A certificate average is not a substitute for a traceable physical sample; a comparison across different standards or test directions can also mislead. If you lack a successful reference lot, say so in the investigation record and ask for a controlled trial instead of declaring the new coil defective.

  • Physical sampleRetain passing and failed pieces with their cut orientation and operation number.
  • Coil recordMatch each sample to a coil label, heat or lot and its purchase order.
  • Material basisRecord the complete grade, standard edition, form and delivery condition.
03 · Material evidence

Compare Material Evidence on the Same Basis

Before comparing two certificates, verify that each document belongs to the sampled coil and that the values use the product standard, specimen direction and test basis required by the drawing or order. Thickness and delivery state may matter alongside tensile and elongation records. n-value and r-value are formability measures in relevant material systems, but a number alone does not predict one die's result. Request them only when the drawing or engineering plan calls for the applicable test.

If the available records are not comparable, record the gap instead of inferring grade equivalence. Any material change requires approval from your design authority.

04 · Process variables

Keep Die, Edge and Press Changes Separate from Steel Changes

Make a side-by-side log of the blank orientation, cut edge and burr, die or tool condition, lubrication, press settings and the operation sequence for the good and failed runs. Ask the process engineer to identify which settings were held constant and which changed. A material certificate cannot show a die-clearance change, and a split part alone cannot prove an oil or tooling problem. This page is an investigation checklist, not a press-setting instruction; follow your own machine and safety procedures. Preserve the log so a later material trial changes one planned variable rather than several at once.

  • Blank and edgeRecord orientation, cutting route, burr and any edge preparation.
  • Tool and pressNote die condition, operation order and approved press settings.
  • LubricationDocument the product and application condition used in each run.
05 · Controlled trial

Agree a Trial with Your Engineering Owner

Before buying a bulk replacement, have the drawing or process owner define the test objective and the material candidate to try. Fix the tool and press setup for the comparison, identify sample quantity and lot, and state which parts, operations and measures must pass. Record whether the material is only a trial or has been approved for a drawing change. ZIVO can discuss an order-specific material offer, but it cannot approve your design or guarantee a stamping result from a grade label. If the trial passes, document exactly which conditions were tested and what still needs confirmation before another lot is released.

  1. Approve the objective

Name who owns the drawing and which failure the trial must resolve.

  2. Fix the comparison

Hold the process settings and sample identities traceable.

  3. Set the release rule

Define the recorded pass measure and who authorizes bulk use.

06 · RFQ and disposition

Send a Traceable RFQ and Keep the Lot Decision

Give ZIVO the part drawing and operation sequence, current and proposed full grade and standard edition, the coil and lot identities, ordered thickness and condition, retained sample or crack map, and the property records your engineer requires. Add the processing variables that changed, the requested trial quantity and your engineer's pass/fail authority. Ask for the exact offered combination and documents; do not assume two similar grade names or certificates are interchangeable. Keep the failed lot on a separate hold or release record with the named decision owner. A successful limited trial should never be reported as approval for all future coils, dies or finished-part uses.
