How to Compare Chinese and International Steel Grades Before a Material Change
A grade crosswalk helps you find what to investigate; it does not approve a material change. Start with the original drawing and complete ordered identity, then check both current product standards, the actual form and required test evidence. Keep the project design owner's written decision with the revised order.

Start From the Original Specification
Collect the current drawing, purchase specification, governing code, full material designation, product form, size and delivery state. Identify which properties, inspection results and service conditions the design actually requires. Without that baseline, a grade-pair chart cannot tell the procurement team what must be preserved.
Ask whether the proposed change affects a finished structural part, a coil or sheet input, or a component that will be fabricated further. Mark the responsible design and quality approvers before comparing any offer.
Identify Both Product Standards and Editions
Write down the complete grade, suffix, product standard and edition on each side. Ask for the current text or controlled project specification that applies to the ordered material. A standard's catalogue title identifies a document; it cannot supply every grade clause or prove that two material names can be exchanged.
Check whether each document addresses the offered form. A plate or structural-shape specification should not be copied onto a coil quotation merely because a material name appears similar. If the offer uses a different form, ask the technical owner to identify its proper product standard before continuing.
Match Product Form, Size and Delivery Condition
Place both proposed products in separate columns with form, thickness or section size, delivery condition and fabrication route. Note any cutting, forming, welding, coating or heat treatment the project will perform. Compare the clauses that apply to those exact conditions, not to a different thickness or product family shown in a reference table.
If one supplier quotes a semi-finished input and the other quotes a finished product, define the additional steps and the point at which each requirement will be checked. Request explicit exceptions to the original specification in writing.

Compare Required Properties and Tests
Create a line-by-line matrix for chemical limits, mechanical properties, impact tests where required, test methods, specimen basis, tolerances, surface and supplementary conditions. For each row, enter the original requirement, the proposed applicable clause, the offered test document and the engineer's assessment. Leave the row open if the clause or evidence is missing.
Check the mill test certificate against the physical heat or lot and the exact ordered form. A similar nominal strength number or a one-line crosswalk cannot settle differences in test basis, design rule or fabrication approval.
Obtain a Project Material Decision
Send the completed requirement matrix and both full material identities to the authorized design owner. Ask for an explicit decision on the particular product, form, size, condition and intended use, including any extra tests or revised fabrication procedure. If the owner does not approve a change, procure the originally specified identity.
Do not treat a supplier's stock statement, a standards title or a web chart as design authority. Keep the approval record and any conditions it imposes with the drawing and purchase order.
Document the Approved Change Through Receipt
Update the purchase order, drawing reference, inspection plan and certificate requirements to the approved identity. State the exact standard edition, form, size, condition, test records and permitted deviation. Ask the seller to acknowledge each field and exception before shipment.
At receipt, match package or coil IDs and heat or lot to the offer, order and MTC. Segregate material with a mismatch or missing approval record. If ZIVO STEEL is asked to quote, request confirmation only for the exact approved material and documents it can actually supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Use it to identify candidate standards, then compare the exact clauses, forms, conditions and test records against the drawing and obtain written project approval.
The purchased input and finished part may have different applicable product specifications. Record the actual coil, sheet, plate, bar or shape and the processing steps before comparing clauses.
Keep both complete identities, the requirement matrix, any tests or fabrication conditions, the design owner's decision, revised order and traceable MTC together.
