SPCC Steel: Specify the JIS Edition and Delivery Condition
SPCC is a starting designation, not a complete purchase order. First match the drawing to the JIS edition and material form. Then send the ordered condition, dimensions, processing step and acceptance evidence together so each supplier quotes the same requirement.

What the SPCC Label Does and Does Not Specify
Start with the material callout on the approved drawing. JSA lists JIS G 3141:2021 for cold-reduced carbon steel sheet and strip; the edition and product form should therefore be explicit in an SPCC enquiry. A coil, a slit strip and a cut sheet can lead to different handling and dimensional questions even when the grade name is unchanged.
Write down what the part actually needs before asking for an alternative: forming operation, finished appearance, downstream coating or welding, and the document that will be used to accept the shipment. The grade label alone does not answer those questions.
Confirm the JIS Edition and Product Form
Copy the standard number and year exactly from the drawing or purchase specification. Identify whether you need coil/strip or cut sheet, and keep thickness, width, cut length and edge requirement on the same enquiry line. If the drawing cites an older edition, ask the technical owner which edition governs before accepting a quote based on another version.
Use the actual order and current standard when checking a proposed designation. This page deliberately does not reproduce temper, finish, tolerance or property tables from an incomplete preview.
Put Temper and Surface on the Same Order Line
Make the ordered condition a separate decision. Ask the technical owner which temper and surface are required for the next operation, whether oiling or other protection is needed, and what will count as acceptable appearance after delivery. Have each seller restate those choices, rather than comparing offers that say only ‘SPCC’.
| Order decision | Put in the enquiry | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Forming | Part drawing, operation and trial basis | Can the quoted condition be tested in the actual tooling? |
| Surface | Required finish and visible face | Is a retained sample or inspection method agreed? |
| Protection | Oiling, storage and downstream cleaning needs | Is the delivered condition compatible with the next process? |
This is an order checklist, not a table of JIS symbols or guaranteed performance.

Connect Dimensions to the Forming Operation
Give the seller the drawing revision, ordered thickness and width, any slit or cut dimensions, and the operation that limits material choice. A visible panel and a deep-formed component may require different trials and appearance checks; the purchaser's own process defines what must be tested.
If a seller proposes another temper, surface or grade, compare the exact order conditions and run the necessary process trial before approving the change. Record who owns that technical decision.
Match the Certificate to the Actual Order
At receipt, compare the purchase order with the coil or sheet identification and the supplied inspection document. Confirm that the document names the agreed standard edition, material form, grade, dimensions, condition and ordered test results. Match identifiers so the evidence can be traced to the delivered material.
A material certificate records its stated checks; it does not prove that the purchaser's forming tool or painted finish will pass. Keep part trials and appearance acceptance tied to the purchaser's process and agreed sample.
Move from Grade Check to a Scoped Coil Enquiry
Use the published SPCC coil page to frame a scoped coil enquiry. Send the edition, condition, dimensions, quantity, destination and acceptance requirements together so availability can be checked against the exact request. Use the cold-rolled coil family page if the category is still open. If the drawing names DC01, use the comparison page to prepare an engineering review; neither page authorizes substitution.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Name the JIS edition, product form, dimensions, ordered temper and surface, processing needs and acceptance evidence.
Choose it from the drawing and the actual forming trial. Ask the seller to identify the proposed temper on the quote, then have the technical owner check that condition against the applicable current standard and process requirements.
Do not approve a substitution from grade names alone. Compare the exact editions, form, condition and required tests, then obtain the responsible engineer's approval.
