Q235B vs Q355B: Check Design Grade and Fabrication Conditions
A higher-looking grade label is not an engineering approval. Put both proposed materials against the same drawing, product form, thickness and delivery condition. Ask the designer which property and test requirements control the part, then ask suppliers to quote those exact identities. This draft is a decision checklist; it does not publish strength values, certify a substitution or promise that ZIVO STEEL can supply every listed form.
Scope of this comparison
Use the same structural drawing, exact form, size, delivery condition and governing design check; the grade number does not approve substitution.

Write both proposed material identities as they appear on the offer and drawing, including the full grade, governing product standard and edition, product form, thickness or size, and delivery condition. If a quote gives only Q235B or Q355B, request the missing order conditions before comparing it with another offer.
Check whether the standard named in the offer applies to the form being delivered. A general steel-family description cannot identify every required property or inspection. Ask the project technical owner to approve the identity used in the design before pricing an alternative.
Check Standard Scope, Suffix and Tests
Obtain the applicable standard text or a qualified material specification for each option. Record what the grade suffix means in that edition, which tests the order invokes, the specimen and reporting basis, and any conditions that change with form or thickness. Do not copy a value from an unsourced comparison table into the purchase order.
Ask the quality owner to map each ordered requirement to a reported MTC field and an acceptance method. If the source, test basis or required report is missing, leave the comparison open until the relevant documents can be checked.
Relate Properties to the Actual Design and Thickness
Ask the structural designer which load case, section size, connection and governing code control the part. Then ask which material property and thickness band the design uses. Comparing two nominal grade names without those inputs cannot show whether the proposed change meets the design requirement.
Keep ordered form and thickness beside any reported property. A value taken from another condition or product type is not a valid approval basis. Where a change alters section size, fabrication or inspection, update the design package before treating the alternative as acceptable.

Review Fabrication and Change Control
List cutting, bending, welding, heat input and any required finishing or coating. Ask the fabricator which procedure qualifications and inspections the actual product and joint demand. A material change may require a different process review even when the final component looks the same.
Record who can approve a drawing or specification deviation. Do not use a supplier page as authorization for a structural change. The engineer and project quality owner should decide whether tests or trials are needed before the revised material is ordered.
Verify the Delivered Lot and Any Deviation
Compare the purchase order, offer, package or coil label and mill test certificate. Check full grade, standard edition, product form, size, delivery condition, heat identifier and every test named in the order. Record mismatches before processing the material.
If the offered grade differs from the drawing, keep the written engineering approval and revised acceptance requirements with the order. Ask ZIVO STEEL to confirm only the exact material and documentation it can supply for your request; commercial availability does not establish structural suitability.
Side-By-Side Comparison
| Attribute | Q235B proposal | Q355B proposal | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material identity | State the full Q235B designation, product standard and edition. | State the full Q355B designation, product standard and edition. | Current applicable clauses for the offered form and condition. |
| Design requirement | Check the specified property and test basis at the ordered size. | Check the same project requirement at the proposed size and condition. | Design drawing and authorized structural review, not nominal grade numbers. |
| Fabrication review | Confirm cutting, forming, welding and inspection for the actual product. | Review any changed process qualification and inspection for the alternative. | Fabrication plan and approved deviation where the material changes. |
| Receiving evidence | Match offer, label and certificate to the approved Q235B order. | Match offer, label and certificate to the approved Q355B order. | Purchase order, heat identity and required reported tests. |
Frequently Asked Questions
The name alone cannot approve the design. Check the applicable standard clauses, product form, thickness, load case, fabrication and acceptance criteria with the responsible engineer.
Do not assume so. Have the project design owner review the exact offered material and issue written approval for any change before ordering or processing it.
Match the heat and product identifiers to the lot, then compare full designation, standard edition, form, size, delivery condition and ordered test results with the approved purchase order.
