The GB carbon structural route

China Q235B Steel Coil Supplier

ZIVO STEEL supplies Q235B hot rolled coil against the specification you send. This page is about the ordering route behind the grade name: what the quality letter fixes, what the order string has to carry, and how an enquiry that also names a designation from another standard system is handled.

01 · Overview

Q235B Coil From ZIVO STEEL

ZIVO STEEL is a steel supplier. It owns no mill and no rolling line, and Q235B coil is arranged with partner factories against the specification on your order, which is why the specification is what this page spends its time on.

Q235B reaches an enquiry in two very different states. Sometimes it is the whole requirement, written on a drawing that already carries the GB standard and the quality letter beside it. Sometimes it is a word copied off an earlier order, sitting next to a second designation from another standard system that nobody has checked. Those two enquiries need different answers, and both are answered below.

The table that follows identifies the Q235B hot-rolled coil route ZIVO supplies under GB/T 700:2006; exact dimensions are verified for your order. Everything after it is about turning one line of that table into an order a mill can accept without filling in a blank on your behalf.

Q235B Coil Specifications

One grade, one rolling route, with the exact dimensions settled for the actual order. A dash in the supply table means the value is verified per order rather than promised in advance.

Read the grade standard and its edition beside the order. GB/T 700:2006 identifies the referenced grade standard, while the dimensional standard and tolerance must be stated for the offered form. Send the required thickness, width, coil inner diameter and maximum coil mass. ZIVO checks what its partner can actually supply for that complete combination before confirming the quotation; another route's published figures are not a Q235B offer.

03 · The GB grade route

Q235B in the GB Carbon Structural Steel Route

Q235B is a designation, not a description of a product. It is put together under GB/T 221:2008, the Chinese national standard that sets how an iron and steel product designation is written, and it belongs to GB/T 700:2006, the GB standard for carbon structural steels. That is where the name comes from, and that standard is what the certificate has to be read against.

The letter at the end is part of the name, and dropping it changes what the order means. The carbon structural family runs more than one quality letter, and the letter is what selects the acceptance requirements the mill has to meet and report, including the impact test condition the steel is tested under and the deoxidation practice it is made to. Write Q235 on an order and that choice is left open; write Q235B and it is closed. What each letter requires is fixed by the edition of the standard your order is accepted against, and those requirement tables are not reproduced on this page: they are checked against the governing edition when the specification is agreed, and ZIVO does not publish figures out of a standard it has not put in front of you.

A GB order for hot rolled coil is written on three layers, and a quotation needs all three. The grade standard, GB/T 700:2006, names the grade and its quality letter. The product standard, GB/T 3274:2017, covers the hot rolled plates, sheets and strips of the carbon structural and high strength low alloy families, and it is what makes the order a coil order rather than a grade note. The dimensional standard, GB/T 709:2019, carries the dimensions, the shape, the weight and the permissible deviations. Name only the grade and you have specified neither the product form nor the tolerance the coil will be measured against.

All three were current on 2026-09-20. A revision project that would fold the grade standard and the product standard into one general-purpose delivery standard is registered on the Chinese standards platform and had published nothing by that date, so neither of them has been replaced and the edition written on your order is still the one that governs it — which is a reason to name the edition rather than to leave it to be looked up later.

One boundary belongs here, because the trade blurs it constantly. Carbon structural steel and high strength low alloy structural steel are two separate GB standards, with separate tables, separate quality classes and separate certificates. The designations on either side are built the same way and look alike on a drawing, and they are not two rungs of one ladder. If the design calls for the higher-strength route, that order is written on the standard made for it.

04 · Writing the order

How to Write a Q235B Order

A quotation needs the grade, finish, thickness, width, length and quantity. On a Q235B hot rolled order the word finish stands for a surface condition, and none of the fields below has a silent default: whatever is left blank is settled by whoever makes the coil.

What you agree with ZIVO sales before the order goes into the specification and is kept on file, so the certificate is later compared against the order that was actually made rather than against anyone's recollection of it.

  • Q235B, with the letter written outQ235 and Q235B are not the same line on an order. The quality letter selects the acceptance requirements, so it belongs in the grade field, on the purchase order and on the certificate that comes back.
  • The standard code with its editionGB/T 700:2006 is the grade route this coil is supplied on. Write the code and the edition together: a certificate can only be checked against an edition that was named before the coil was made.
  • The surface conditionAs-rolled with the mill scale on, pickled, or pickled and oiled. All three are supplied on this route and one of them has to be chosen, because it decides what arrives and how it has to be stored until it runs.
  • Thickness and widthState the required thickness and width from the drawing, together with the applicable tolerance and GB/T 709 dimensional standard. Do not assume an intermediate width is a routine slitting job; ask for the offered form and processing route to be confirmed.
  • Coil inner diameter and coil weightState the coil inner diameter and maximum coil mass accepted by your uncoiler and handling equipment. These are your equipment limits to check against the actual offered coil, not a fixed range promised for every Q235B order.
  • Edge condition and further processingMill edge or trimmed edge, and whether the coil is to be slit or cut to length before it ships. Both move the price and the lead time, so they belong in the enquiry and not in an e-mail sent afterwards.
  • Quantity, and where an order startsOne coil, at least 3 t. Give the quantity in tonnes rather than in coils where your planning works that way, and say whether the tonnage is firm or an estimate.
  • What the certificate has to carry backThe standard code with its edition, the grade written with its quality letter, the heat number and the measured values. Ask for that list while the enquiry is open and it becomes a checkbox at the far end rather than an argument.

When the Enquiry Also Names A36, SS400 or S235JR

A drawing that says Q235B and an enquiry that says Q235B are not always the same document. The second one often carries a designation from another standard system as well, put there by a colleague, an end client or an earlier supplier. That is handled by comparing requirements, never by matching names.

Designation on the enquiryThe standard it belongs toWhat is confirmed before a quotation goes out
A36ASTM A36/A36M, a specification for carbon structural steel, whose product forms are structural shapes, plates and barsWhich delivered form is actually needed: coil, cut sheet from coil, or plate. Hot rolled sheet and strip supplied in coils and cut lengths is ordered to ASTM A1011/A1011M-25, and heavy-thickness coils past its size limits to ASTM A1018/A1018M-25, whose own abstract gives that band as 0.230 to 1.000 in [6.0 through 25 mm] and states that the material is available only in coils; both run under the general requirements specification ASTM A568/A568M-25a. And whether certification to A36/A36M is called for by your drawing, your code or your end client, in which case the deliverable is not a mill coil at all.
SS400JIS G 3101:2024, Rolled steels for general structure, whose scope covers hot rolled steels for general structures such as bridges, ships and rolling stock, and hot extruded sectionsThe edition the order is accepted against, the full grade with its suffix, the product form — clause 4 of that standard, Symbols of grade and applicable dimensions, is what ties a grade symbol to the dimensions it may be ordered in, and it is not published free — the thickness band and the test conditions the values were produced under.
S235JREN 10025-2:2019, hot rolled products of structural steels: technical delivery conditions for non-alloy structural steels, which does not apply to structural hollow sections or tubesThe edition, the full grade including the letters that carry the impact requirement, the product form, and the delivery condition the steel is supplied in.

Two rules hold across every line of that table. Each designation is defined by its own standard, in its own edition, for its own product forms, and a certificate proves only what that standard says it proves. And these grades are commonly compared, which makes a cross-reference a place to begin a specification review rather than a conclusion to it: writing one designation where another was named requires full specification review and stays subject to purchaser approval.

The phrase that needs its own paragraph is A36 coil. It is a term enquiries use, not a coil specification, and answering it with a price is how a certificate ends up unable to say what was asked of it. If what sits behind the phrase is a strength level rather than a certificate, the question is which Structural Steel grade under A1011/A1011M-25 is to be ordered, and under which general requirements specification. If it really is a certificate to A36/A36M, then the deliverable is a shape, a plate or a bar, and the enquiry has moved off this page.

What ZIVO will not do is put one of these designations in place of another on a quotation, or set Q235B beside one of them as though the two names between them settled the order. They do not settle it. The standard, the edition, the product form and the measured values settle it, and each of those is written down before anything ships.

Inspection and Documents

A Q235B order becomes checkable at the moment the certificate arrives, and only if three things were written down before the coil was made: the standard code with its edition, the grade with its quality letter, and the heat the coil came out of. A certificate carrying measured values but no edition has nothing to be compared with.

Ask for the mill original rather than a retyped summary. A retyped sheet loses the one property that makes the document worth having, which is that the figures on it were issued by whoever ran the heat.

  • Mill test certificate and packing listEach shipment comes with a mill test certificate and a packing list.
  • The certificate is the mill originalWhat travels with the shipment is the mill's own certificate, not a version rewritten by anyone in between.
  • What to ask the certificate forThe standard code with its edition, the grade written with its quality letter, the heat number and the measured values, so that every line on it has something on your order to be read against.
  • Checks before the coil leavesThickness, width, surface, weight, packing and labels are checked by ZIVO before shipment.
  • Third-party inspectionInspection by a third party, SGS or BV for example, is accepted; its cost is paid by you.
  • Coil label photosPhotos of the coil labels can be provided, which is the cheapest traceability check on the list.
  • The specification on fileWhat ZIVO sales agreed with you before the order is kept on file, and it is the document the certificate is read against.

Packing and Shipment

The usual ports of loading are Qingdao and Tianjin.

What protects a Q235B coil on the water is decided before it is made, not after it is booked. The surface condition is the first half of it: a coil sent as-rolled with the mill scale on arrives in a different state from one that has been pickled and oiled, and that choice belongs in the order. The packing, the edge protection and the rust prevention are the second half, and they are set with ZIVO sales as part of the specification and kept on file with the rest of it.

So say at the enquiry stage how long the coil will wait before it runs, whether it will be stored outside, and how humid the crossing and the yard at your end are. Those answers change what gets specified. An e-mail sent once the coil is on the water changes nothing.
