Q235B vs ASTM A36: Review a Proposed Grade Change
Start with what you are buying. ASTM A36/A36M's public scope names structural shapes, plates and bars; it does not name ordinary hot-rolled coil. A coil request therefore needs its own applicable product standard and an explicit engineering review, not an A36 label copied onto a coil quote. For any proposed material change, compare the actual ordered form and requirements on both sides and obtain written approval from the project design owner.
Scope of this comparison
A proposed cross-standard material change requires the actual standard texts, product form and designer approval. Do not label ordinary hot-rolled coil as an A36 product.

Start With the Ordered Product Form
The public ASTM A36/A36M scope covers structural shapes, plates and bars. Coil, sheet and strip are not named in that scope. The separate ASTM A1011/A1011M public scope names hot-rolled sheet and strip in coils and cut lengths, but that does not make an A1011 item an A36 item or approve a Q235B change.
Write down whether the purchase is for a structural plate, shape, bar or coil input that will later be cut and fabricated. If the drawing calls for a finished structural part but the supplier offers coil, ask the engineer to identify the material specification that actually applies to the purchased input and to the finished component. Do not use a catalogue name to bridge that gap.
Record Both Standard Identities
ASTM identifies A36/A36M-19 as its active carbon-structural-steel specification for the stated forms. China's public standard catalogue lists GB/T 700-2006 Carbon structural steels as current, but the public record does not expose the grade clauses or tests needed for this comparison. The order must identify the complete Q235B designation and its governing document rather than assuming the catalogue title supplies its technical limits.
Ask for both full standard editions, the offered product form, delivery condition and mill document. A36 and Q235B are not automatically the same material. The applicable clauses and the project specification must be compared before any proposal is accepted.
Compare Requirements One by One
Create two columns from the actual standard texts and a third for the project requirement. Review chemistry, mechanical properties, product form, thickness band, delivery condition, test method, specimen location, supplementary requirements, surface condition and certificate wording where the applicable documents require them. Record the clause and edition beside each row.
Do not fill a missing clause with a trading site's equivalence table. Mark a row unresolved if one side has no verified value, if the test conditions differ, or if the project requires additional acceptance evidence. The responsible engineer must decide whether any difference is acceptable for the actual part.

Keep Approval and Welding Documents Together
Where welding is planned, ask the project design and welding authorities which procedures and inspections apply to the offered form and joint. A material proposal cannot be approved by a supplier page or a similar-sounding grade name.
Keep the written deviation request, clause-by-clause comparison, revised drawing or purchase order, welding review and final approver's decision in one record. If the project has not named an approver or does not permit alternatives, continue with the specified material identity.
Issue a Purchase Order Only for the Approved Identity
Send the full standard and edition, complete designation, product form and thickness, delivery condition, quantity, supplementary tests and certificate requirements. Ask the seller to tie the quoted material and eventual MTC to those fields and to the physical heat or lot. Keep the project's written material decision with the order.
The Q235B coil quotation path answers a coil supply question; it is not a coil offer under ASTM A36/A36M. Ask ZIVO STEEL to confirm only the exact material, form and documentation it can supply for your approved order. If the requested form falls outside a cited standard's scope, resolve the standard and approval before accepting the quotation.
Side-By-Side Comparison
| Attribute | Q235B proposal | ASTM A36 proposal | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product form and scope | Verify the complete Q235B designation and applicable product-form clauses; the public catalogue alone is insufficient. | The public A36/A36M scope names structural shapes, plates and bars. A coil request needs its own applicable sheet or strip specification. | Public standard-scope records only; obtain the current full text before approving the exact form. |
| Project requirements | Map the drawing to the exact offered form, size, condition and required tests. | Map the same drawing to the form and tests of the proposed A36 item. | Applicable standard clauses plus the project material and inspection specification. |
| Change approval | Keep the original design, welding and inspection basis explicit. | Request formal design and welding review before any proposed material change. | Authorized project change record; this table is not an equivalence approval. |
| Order and receipt | Match full designation, edition, form and heat to the approved order. | Match full designation, edition, form and heat to the approved alternative order. | Offer, purchase order, package identity and mill test certificate. |
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Compare the applicable editions, forms, thicknesses, clauses, tests and project requirements, then obtain written design approval for the exact proposed item.
ASTM A36/A36M's public scope names shapes, plates and bars, not coil. Identify the applicable coil specification and have the project authority approve the actual purchased form.
Keep the complete order identities, clause-by-clause comparison, lot and MTC mapping, fabrication or welding review and written approval from the project design owner.
