Weld Seam Ordering for Industrial Stainless Steel Pipe
A welded pipe quote can name the grade and size yet leave the inside seam undefined. State which seam condition your design permits, what treatment is requested and how the delivered pipe will be checked before accepting an offer.
Set the Service and Governing Pipe Specification
Begin with the intended service and the design authority responsible for it. Name pipe rather than tube when pipe is the specified product form, and give the governing product standard with the edition required by the order. Add the grade, welded route, outside diameter, wall, length, end condition and any project drawing. A tubing tolerance or historical edition should not be substituted for a pipe requirement merely because both products are round stainless steel. The stainless pipe product page describes the available sourcing discussion; any special service, finish or qualification must be checked for the actual order.
- UseState the service and design approval owner.
- ProductIdentify pipe form, grade, route and current order standard.
- GeometryInclude outside diameter, wall, length and ends.
Describe the Inside and Outside Seams Separately
Tell the supplier which face matters to the process and what may remain after welding. An external bead that is acceptable for handling may not satisfy an internal clearance or cleaning requirement. Use a drawing or approved reference to define the allowable profile, finish, affected length and inspection access. Words such as “smooth” or “flush” need a measurement method and acceptance criterion. An inside surface may not be fully visible from a pipe end, so ask how the offered route will demonstrate its condition. Keep an as-welded seam distinct from a physically removed or dressed bead.
| Surface | Condition to specify | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Outside seam | Allowed reinforcement or named treatment | Agreed profile or visual check |
| Inside seam | Clearance, finish or as-welded state | Accessible inspection method and limit |
| Ends and cut length | Seam condition at fabrication interface | Drawing or end-condition check |
Do Not Treat Seam Finishes as Interchangeable
As-welded, bead-removed, dressed, heat-treated and chemically treated describe different physical conditions. If the design requires one, state the operation and the surface it affects, then ask whether the sourcing route can perform and document it for the requested dimensions and product standard. A proposal to remove a bead does not by itself qualify the pipe for hygienic, pressure or heat-exchanger service. The engineering authority must decide fitness; the supplier must confirm what it can deliver. Keep a requested but unverified condition pending rather than presenting it as an available catalog option.
| Requested state | Specify before quoting | Confirm from source |
|---|---|---|
| As welded | Allowable inner and outer profile | Actual delivered condition |
| Bead treatment | Face, extent and profile target | Feasibility and resulting check |
| Heat or surface treatment | Governing requirement and finish | Route, record and acceptance scope |

Write the Examination Scope and Acceptance Rule
Separate a seam-profile check from a weld-integrity examination and a surface-finish review. Under the actual governing standard and design, identify the required method, coverage, acceptance criterion, witness point and document type. Optional tests or supplementary requirements must be stated on the order when needed; a generic “tested” quotation does not reveal which weld length, pipe lot or unit was examined. Ask how the inspection record and heat or lot marks link to the delivered bundle. If a request refers to an old tubing edition or a standard for a different product form, have the design owner verify the current applicable document before finalizing the PO.
- MethodName profile, integrity or appearance checks separately.
- ExtentState the units or weld area to be covered.
- EvidenceLink results and marks to the accepted PO line.
Check the Actual Route Before Accepting a Special Seam
Send the drawing, intended service, pipe specification, grade, dimensions, inside and outside seam states, any treatment, tests and document request to the sourcing contact. Ask for a response that separates an accepted offer from alternatives or open items. A quotation for industrial welded pipe does not automatically include internal bead removal, annealing, pickling, sanitary finish or certified pressure duty. Confirm which partner operation, inspection access and records are available for this order without assuming ZIVO owns welding or finishing equipment. Keep the agreed scope in the acknowledgement so a later receiver can check the actual delivery.

Send a Seam-Specific RFQ and Receipt Check
An actionable request states the service and design contact, pipe standard and edition, grade and welded route, outside diameter, wall, length and ends, inner and outer seam condition, any verified treatment, inspection method and acceptance, heat or lot marking, documents, quantity and destination. At receipt, compare bundle identity and records against that order and inspect the seam using the agreed accessible method. A visible seam alone is not a failure if the accepted condition allows it; a polished appearance alone is not proof of integrity. Ask ZIVO to confirm special requirements through the actual supplier before treating them as an accepted offer.
| RFQ line | Provide | Confirm at receipt |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Pipe route, standard, edition, grade and size | Mark and dimension record |
| Seam | Inner and outer condition, treatment and drawing | Agreed profile or finish evidence |
| Examination | Method, extent, criterion and document | Traceable inspection record |
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The accepted order must define whether the inside and outside seam may remain as welded and how the condition will be inspected.
No. Request the exact face, treatment and result, then obtain order-specific supplier confirmation.
No. State the governing standard, method, coverage, acceptance rule, witness requirement and traceable document needed for the actual service.
Not by itself. The design authority must assess the applicable product, service, fabrication and inspection requirements, and the supplier must confirm the actual route.
