Steel Coil Oiling and Degreasing RFQ Guide
“Oiled” is too broad to tell a processor whether incoming coil will survive storage and then clean, form or paint on the actual line. Start with the next operation, define the requested surface condition and test compatibility before locking the order.
Start With the Substrate and Next Operation
State whether the incoming material is cold-rolled coil, hot-rolled pickled-and-oiled coil or another specifically confirmed product form. Record the grade, governing standard and edition, finish, size and the sequence after delivery: storage, blanking, forming, welding, cleaning, painting or plating. A surface condition acceptable for a forming operation may not be ready for a paint or bonding step. Ask which residue the next operation can tolerate and which it must remove. Do not transfer a cold-rolled surface request to HRPO without checking the actual route and acknowledgement.
- Incoming materialIdentify form, standard, finish and actual source route.
- Next processList storage and operations in their real sequence.
- Sensitive stepName any coating, adhesion or welding constraint.
Separate Rust Protection From Forming Lubrication
Temporary rust-preventive oil, a later press lubricant and residual process oil may have different functions and chemistries. Ask what surface condition the supplying route can actually offer and what information it can provide about the oil or residue; do not assume any named mill oil or non-oiled option is available. Tell the processing team what the incoming condition may be, then ask whether its cleaning route has been qualified for that condition. A material described only as “oiled” leaves the cleanability question unanswered. Request a labeled alternative if the preferred condition cannot be confirmed.
| Condition question | Decision impact | Confirm with |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary protection | Transit and warehouse exposure | Actual sourcing route |
| Forming lubrication | Tooling and process performance | Processing team |
| Cleaning residue | Paint, plating or bonding preparation | Cleaning and finishing owner |
Describe Transit and Storage Before Choosing a Condition
List the shipment route, packing, warehouse environment, expected time before processing and the point when wrap or other protection will be removed. An order for little or no protective oil may increase corrosion exposure; an offered oil may require a cleaning step that the line cannot perform. Neither outcome is determined by a generic brochure warranty. Agree what dispatch and receipt observations will be recorded, including packaging damage, visible rust, staining or residue, without using appearance alone to assign cause. Keep storage assumptions and exceptions in the RFQ so competing offers address the same conditions.
| Exposure input | What to state in the RFQ | Receipt record |
|---|---|---|
| Transport and packing | Route, wrap and handling assumptions | Package condition and ID |
| Warehouse | Environment and expected interval | Storage record and surface observation |
| Opening for processing | When protection is removed | Lot, face and residue condition |

Use a Representative Cleaning or Line Trial
If the next step is paint, plating, bonding or a sensitive forming process, request a representative sample or identified trial lot of the proposed incoming condition. Record its material, source lot if available, exposure before the trial and the actual cleaning chemistry, concentration, temperature and process sequence used by the receiving line. Choose the adhesion, surface or process checks appropriate to that application and write down who approves the result. A visually clean part alone does not prove later coating performance. If no representative trial is possible, keep compatibility as an open condition in the order decision rather than treating a general “degreasable” label as proof.
Identify
Keep sample, material and proposed surface condition together.
Run
Use the real cleaning or forming route under controlled conditions.
Decide
Record the agreed result and authorized approver.
Put the Surface Condition and Receipt Rule in the PO
Write the requested substrate and finish, confirmed surface-oil or other condition, agreed packing and storage assumptions, required trial reference and the receipt observations that matter. If a residue, staining or corrosion criterion is important, state how it will be checked and which face, lot or sample it covers. Ask the supplying route to acknowledge what it can control and document. At arrival, retain coil identity, packaging condition and the observed surface before processing; a visible difference should be described and investigated before anyone declares that the wrong chemistry caused it. Avoid a claim that ZIVO operates a cleaning or painting line.
- SpecifyName actual material, surface condition and packing.
- ConfirmRequest acknowledgement of available condition and evidence.
- InspectRecord receipt observations and lot identity.
Request Comparable Alternatives and an Order-Specific Answer
Send the material route, intended next operations, desired temporary protection, cleaning limitations, transit and storage plan, proposed trial, receipt criteria, quantity and target delivery. Ask for a primary offer and clearly labeled alternatives when the exact condition is unavailable. Each alternative should identify its surface condition, cleaning implication, evidence, cost or timing effect and who confirms it. Compare the resulting delivered condition, not an unsupported oil name or a generic corrosion promise. ZIVO can check the specific request with its sourcing route; the supplier response must establish feasibility for the actual order.
| RFQ field | Provide | Ask the offer to state |
|---|---|---|
| Material and surface | Form, standard, finish, requested condition | Available route and named condition |
| Downstream process | Cleaning, forming or finishing limits | Known compatibility information and gaps |
| Exposure and proof | Storage, packing, trial and receipt rule | Confirmed evidence and any alternative |
Frequently Asked Questions
No. It may reduce one cleaning question but can change corrosion exposure during shipment and storage. Confirm the available condition and test it against the actual pretreatment and finishing line.
Do not assume that. Request information on the offered incoming condition and run a representative trial with the actual cleaning process and acceptance method.
No. They serve different purposes. State whether the processing operation will add its own lubricant and which residues must be removed before the next step.
No. Protection depends on the offered material condition, packaging, transit, storage and order terms. Ask the supplier to confirm any specific performance requirement for the transaction.
