Carbon Pipe End Preparation: Connection and Inspection Guide
A plain, bevelled, threaded or grooved end is meaningful only with the joint it will serve. Put the connection drawing, preparation owner, end checks and protection on the same order line.
Choose the Joint Before the End Label
Identify whether the assembly uses a butt weld, a named thread system, a mechanical coupling or a plain end to be prepared after delivery. Record the applicable design drawing and code, pipe product standard and edition, grade, manufacturing route, outside diameter, wall and length. A plain cut end may still need a specified squareness, burr and cleanliness condition. A bevel suitable for one welding design does not automatically suit another wall or procedure. Establish the pipe product and delivery route first, then choose the end condition that the connection actually requires.
Connection
Name the weld, thread, coupling or later site-preparation route.
Pipe
Record its standard, grade, route, OD, wall and length.
Design
Attach the applicable joint drawing and code basis.
Assign Each Preparation Operation
For end A and end B separately, name who cuts, bevels, threads or grooves the pipe and whether the operation occurs at the source, a contracted processor or the site. A plain stock quotation is different from a quotation for connection-ready ends. Any preparation must be checked against the actual partner, pipe dimensions, joint design and order; do not assume it is included with pipe supply. Ask the quote to show the responsible party, stage, inspection handover and any excluded work so the fabricator can plan the remaining operation.
- SourceConfirm which end condition is actually offered with the pipe.
- ProcessorName any separately contracted end operation and inspection.
- SiteList preparation that remains with the fabricator after receipt.
Use the Actual Joint-System Specification
For a butt weld, use the approved joint drawing and an applicable preparation standard; ASME B16.25 is a scoped example for buttwelding ends of piping components, not a universal angle for all pipe. For a threaded joint, specify the thread form, applicable edition and gaging basis; ASME B1.20.1 concerns a named general-purpose inch thread system. For a mechanical coupling, identify the manufacturer and the exact groove profile and inspection method it requires. Do not transfer dimensions or gages between systems, or infer that any operation is available from ZIVO without an order-specific partner confirmation.
- WeldAttach the approved bevel and root-face drawing if required.
- ThreadName the thread standard, engagement and gage basis.
- CouplingName the selected system's groove profile and check.
Agree Inspection, Identity and Protection
Set the measurement stage and sampling extent for the end condition actually purchased. Check a bevel against its contracted geometry and surface requirement, a thread with the named gage, or a groove against the chosen coupling system; for a plain end, agree cut squareness, burr and damage criteria. Specify whether caps or sleeves are required, how ends are protected in a bundle and who records a damaged cover before dispatch. Keep pipe heat or lot, piece or bundle mark and the two-end condition together so an arrival result can be matched to the purchase-order line.
- MeasureUse the selected joint's geometry and gage basis.
- TracePreserve heat or lot and piece or bundle identity.
- ProtectAgree end caps, handling and damage records where needed.
Send a Two-End RFQ and Receipt Checklist
Send the connection drawing, service and applicable joint standard, pipe standard and grade, route, OD × wall × length, quantity and destination. For each end, state the required condition, preparation owner, drawing or system profile, gaging method, repair allowance and protection. Ask the quote to confirm the actual source or processor and any exclusions, plus the document and marking handover. At receipt, inspect identity and protection before fit-up or rework; record damage or dimensional mismatch by piece and lot against the same order line. This preserves a comparison with dispatch evidence rather than relying on the vague phrase ‘connection ready.’
- End ASpecify condition, owner, measurement and protection.
- End BState any different preparation or inspection requirement.
- ReceiveCheck the marked ends before site work changes them.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. State the actual connection and any cut, burr, bevel or groove requirement that must be completed before fit-up.
No. The approved joint design, applicable standard, wall and welding procedure determine the preparation and its inspection.
No. Name the thread or coupling system, applicable profile and gage; confirm it against the selected pipe and joining design.
End preparation is not assumed. Include the drawing and condition in the RFQ so the actual source or processing partner can confirm the order-specific route.
