Reflective surface acceptance

Mirror Stainless Steel: Turn a Trade Name into an Inspection Standard

Mirror, No.8 and 8K can be used as trade descriptions, but they are not a complete shared inspection specification. ASSDA describes No.8 on stainless sheet as extensively polished and buffed. Agree the actual sample, reflected appearance and form before placing an order.

01 · Reflection target

Define the Reflected Appearance Needed

Describe what the finished part must reflect and at what viewing distance and angle it will be judged. Mark the visible face, neighbouring surfaces and any areas with tighter cosmetic requirements. Decide whether the requested surface is merely a feedstock or will remain exposed after fabrication.

Use an identified physical sample, not a catalogue adjective, to start the quotation. A reflective photo captured under one light can hide distortion or fine marks visible in another. State the acceptance conditions before material is purchased.

02 · Finish names

Separate Mirror, No.8 and 8K Names

ASSDA lists No.8 as a highly reflective stainless sheet finish made through extensive polishing and buffing. It also notes that this is not a standard mill finish. This does not establish that every seller’s “Mirror” or “8K” label is the same process or appearance.

Ask for the producer’s actual finish description, product form and retained sample. If an alternative name is proposed, compare its reflected image and allowed defects under the same viewing setup. Record the chosen designation and sample identifier in the order rather than approving a trade-word substitution.

03 · Form and process

Check Product Form and Later Fabrication

The ASSDA No.8 example is most directly about sheet. A coil, cut sheet, formed panel or fabricated assembly needs its own confirmation of available process and finished appearance. Ask where polishing occurs in relation to slitting, cutting, bending, welding and final handling.

A sample taken before fabrication may not show marks or distortion introduced afterward. Plan an approval point for the final visible part when the project requires it. This page does not imply that ZIVO has a mirror-polishing line or a stocked mirror-finish range.

04 · Reference sample

Agree a Reflection and Defect Reference

Keep an approved sample of sufficient size to reveal reflected-image distortion and visible marks. Specify the light, angle, viewing distance, orientation, protected face and acceptable variation. If adjoining parts must match, compare them side by side under the same conditions.

ASSDA cautions that a roughness number alone may not capture perceived surface appearance. Write the sample identifier and inspection point into the purchase documents. Do not assume one universal reflectivity or defect threshold for every producer and form.

05 · Handling and receipt

Protect the Surface and Inspect at the Agreed Point

Ask for the protective-film and packaging arrangement that fits the actual form and shipping route, then agree when the surface will be uncovered for inspection. Record who handles film removal and what happens if marks appear during fabrication or installation.

At receipt, identify the lot and compare the visible face with the retained sample under the agreed viewing method. Photograph any deviation with context and preserve identification. A shipping photo or generic polished-sheet image is not evidence that the delivered lot passed the project’s mirror acceptance test.

06 · Evidence limits

Keep No.8 Evidence and ZIVO Capability Separate

ASSDA gives an industry description of No.8 polished stainless sheet and the limits of appearance measurement. It does not establish that “Mirror”, “No.8” and “8K” are one universally specified process or appearance.

ZIVO has one confirmed 304 cold-rolled stainless steel coil configuration labelled 8K: 0.26–2.5 mm thickness, standard widths 1000 / 1219 / 1250 mm, coil ID 508 / 610 mm and coil weight 3–10 t. This exact coil row does not promise sheet, stock, in-house mirror polishing or a universal reflected appearance. For a Mirror enquiry, compare the proposed producer finish, physical reference sample and reflected-image acceptance conditions before deciding whether this 8K-labelled coil meets the project need.
