BA vs Mirror: Separate Process from Visual Acceptance
A bright surface and an accepted reflected image are different procurement requirements. Describe the image your finished part must show, then ask the supplier to name the actual finish route, substrate and inspection method. Approve the visual result on a controlled sample before issuing a production order.
Scope of this comparison
Specify the desired reflected image on the actual grade and form, then confirm each producer route and physical sample. BA, No.8 and 8K are not universal synonyms.

Define the Reflected-Image Requirement
Describe where the surface will be used, which faces are visible, and what reflection the design expects. Record the reference object, viewing distance, angle and lighting used to judge the image. A word such as shiny or mirror cannot tell the receiving team whether a distorted reflection, haze or polishing line is acceptable.
Ask the designer to approve a master sample and, for large panels or fabricated parts, a mock-up in the intended installation position. Keep the sample identifier with the drawing and quotation so different bidders answer the same visual question.
Separate Mill-Finish and Polished-Finish Names
Ask the seller to state the exact finish route being quoted, rather than treating BA and a commercial mirror label as synonyms. ASSDA describes its No.8 example on stainless sheet as extensively polished and buffed, and says that No.8 is not a standard mill finish. That source-specific No.8 description does not define every product sold as mirror finish or make it equivalent to BA. The project still needs an accepted sample of the actual product.
Record the applicable finish designation and inspection terms in the order. If a polished surface is required after bending or welding, name who is responsible for that work and where final appearance will be inspected. Do not infer a post-fabrication service from a base-material quotation.
Compare Brightness, Image Clarity and Product Form
Compare the proposed samples at the same grade, thickness, viewing conditions and product form. Inspect brightness and the sharpness of a reflected object separately. Ask whether a sample is a small flat coupon, a full sheet or a formed component, because the final geometry and handling can change the result the project sees.
Check the actual usable face, any visible transition between adjacent pieces and the accepted defect limits. If a supplier changes the substrate, polishing sequence or protection, request a fresh comparison instead of assuming the previous sample still represents the offer.

Approve the Sample and Surface Protection
Label the master sample with grade, thickness, form, finish process, lot, viewing method and approval date. Define which face receives film or other protection, how the product will be packed, and when the film is removed. A reflective surface can appear different when protective material, handling marks or fabrication residue is present, so the inspection point must be agreed in advance.
For a multi-panel installation, check a mock-up and assign a person to approve matching. Record how a scratched or visibly different item will be isolated and compared with the reference sample before additional fabrication.
Write a Verifiable Finish Order
Send the exact stainless grade, form, size, finish route, approved sample ID, reflected-image criterion, allowed marks, protection and inspection method. Ask the seller to identify each step included in its offer and any exception. Keep polishing or final finishing responsibility explicit if it occurs after cutting, forming or welding.
At receipt, match the order and documents to the lot and sample, then inspect the visible face under the agreed conditions. Retain photos and sample references with the acceptance record. Ask ZIVO STEEL to confirm only the BA or polished product and services it can actually quote for this specification.
Side-By-Side Comparison
| Attribute | BA offer | Mirror offer | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Named process | Ask the producer to identify the actual BA route and delivered form. | Ask the producer to identify the actual polishing route. ASSDA describes its No.8 sheet example as extensively polished and buffed. | Exact producer finish description; source-specific No.8 example only. |
| Visual target | Compare brightness and reflected-image clarity on the offered BA sample. | Compare the same visual targets on the offered Mirror sample. | One agreed object, light, viewing distance and angle. |
| Form and fabrication | Check the sample on the actual form and after planned fabrication. | Check the proposed reflective finish on that form and after fabrication. | Representative finished-part sample; a small coupon may not predict the assembly. |
| Protection and receipt | Name the visible face, sample ID, protection and inspection point. | Name the same fields and any polishing or handling responsibility. | Sample-backed order and lot-specific receiving check. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do not use the label as the visual acceptance test. State the desired reflected-image result and approve a sample under the viewing conditions of the project.
Approve a fabricated sample or mock-up and name who performs any final finishing. Inspect the visible face after those operations and protection removal.
Include grade, form, size, finish route, master sample ID, image criterion, protection, allowed marks and viewing method, plus the person who approves the final result.
