Galvanized Sheet for HVAC Duct Fabrication: RFQ Guide
Order the steel specified by the duct designer, then hand it to the fabricator with clear thickness, coating and traceability. A raw sheet does not certify a finished duct.
Begin with the Approved Duct Schedule
Ask the project designer for the governing duct construction document and edition, material schedule, duct shape, pressure class and fabricator's planned forming and seam method. Different projects and jurisdictions can select different requirements, so do not replace this schedule with an internet gauge table. If material, coating or testing requirements are missing, return the question to the design authority before ordering. Attach the drawing and schedule reference to the raw-sheet RFQ so a quoted grade or coating can be compared with what the fabricator is approved to use.
Design
Record the project document, edition and material schedule.
Fabrication
Name the shape, seam and forming route.
Approval
Return missing or changed material requirements to the designer.
Write the Galvanized Sheet Order Line
State the sheet product standard and edition, base-steel grade, metallic coating type and designation, and whether hot-dip or another route is approved. Write actual sheet thickness and its tolerance basis; a bare gauge name does not identify the finished thickness across every convention. Add width, length, flatness where required, piece count and delivery condition. The chosen standard's scope and the project's design schedule both matter: a general galvanized label alone does not select the needed grade or coating. Ask the actual source to confirm this exact combination on the quotation.
- MaterialName product standard, grade and coating designation.
- GeometryWrite actual thickness, tolerance and flat size.
- QuantityState pieces, bundles and destination.
Plan Bends, Seams and Exposed Edges
Ask the duct shop which bends, seams, folds, cut edges and joined faces the sheet will experience. The metallic coating designation describes the ordered sheet; it is not a completed-duct leakage, fire or lifetime guarantee. Where the project requires special edge treatment, cleaning or repair after forming, allocate that operation to the fabricator and confirm the incoming steel can support it. Do not impose one coating code on every component without the approved project schedule. Keep the sheet's delivered condition distinct from the coating and sealing condition after duct assembly.
- BendsCheck forming and visible-surface expectations.
- CutsAssign handling of exposed edges.
- SeamsKeep assembly and sealing with the fabricator.
Verify Bundles Before Cutting
Specify the required material certificate or coating evidence, lot or heat identity, bundle marks, piece count, protective packing and destination. At receipt, compare the documented product standard, grade and coating designation with the purchase order, then sample actual thickness, dimensions and surface condition under the agreed method. Photograph transport damage with its bundle identity before the material is moved or formed. If the source supplies slit or cut pieces, retain the mark mapping from parent material to delivered stacks. A generic certificate image cannot prove that a particular bundle met the agreed requirements.
- IdentifyMatch bundle, lot and purchase-order line.
- CheckCompare coating code, thickness, size and surface.
- RecordPreserve damage or mismatch evidence before forming.
Keep Finished-Duct Duties Separate
Send the approved schedule and drawing with the sheet standard, grade, coating designation, actual thickness and tolerance, size, quantity, forming concerns, documents, marking, packing and destination. The source-specific quote confirms what raw material can be supplied and which checks accompany it. The duct fabricator and design authority separately own seam construction, assembly, installation and any completed-duct leakage or fire-performance verification. An industry duct standard may guide that work, but a sheet delivery by itself cannot establish finished-duct compliance. Keep those separate handoffs on the order and receiving record.
Steel order
Confirm the exact sheet and its delivery evidence.
Fabrication
Assign cutting, forming, seams and edge treatment.
Finished duct
Assign construction and testing to the project parties.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Write actual thickness, the tolerance basis and the approved product and duct material schedule.
Use the project-approved material schedule and component requirements; do not apply one coating code universally without a design basis.
No. Leakage depends on the completed duct design, seams, assembly and test specified by the project.
No such service is assumed. Put fabrication, installation and finished-duct testing in separate confirmed work scopes.
