Carbon Plate for Fabrication: Traceability and Cutting RFQ

A plate certificate is useful only when every cut piece can still be tied to the source plate. Agree the grade, delivery condition, cut allowance and mark transfer before nesting begins.

01 · Design and form

Use the Approved Plate Specification

Start with the approved drawing, the part's intended service and the design authority's selected product standard, edition, grade and required condition. Distinguish plate supplied as plate from a cut sheet derived from coil; the two forms do not inherit each other's product designation merely because dimensions look similar. Ask which tests and documents are required by the project before requesting quotations. If a source proposes a different grade or route, keep the original order line and obtain written design approval for the change. The carbon plate page explains the basic material-order fields.

  1. Drawing

Identify the component and approved design basis.

  2. Plate

Name the exact product standard, grade and edition.

  3. Change

Send any alternate material to the design authority.

02 · Yield and condition

Quote Delivery Condition and Cut Allowance

State the required delivery condition only as specified by the approved standard and drawing. Give parent plate thickness and dimensions, finished blank size, orientation, number of pieces, cutting method and kerf or machining allowance. A nominal plate area that cannot yield the approved blanks is not a complete offer. Note any special impact, ultrasonic or other inspection requirement from the contract and ask the actual source to confirm it; do not assume a default test level or processing line. Record who owns cutting, offcuts, edge condition and any separately quoted operation before comparing prices.

  • ConditionUse the standard and design-approved delivery state.
  • AllowanceInclude kerf, machining and nest orientation.
  • ScopeConfirm tests, cutting and offcut ownership in the quote.
03 · Mark transfer

Transfer Heat and Plate Identity to Every Blank

Before cutting, map each source heat, plate mark and certificate reference to the nesting plan. Assign a unique blank or part identifier and record who transfers the mark, when it is applied and how it survives blasting, machining or coating. Do not mix pieces from different heats under one unlabeled stack. Retain the parent plate photograph and cutting map with the order, but use an actual mark and document trail to prove which piece came from which plate. An MTC identifies documented source material; an unmarked loose blank cannot be traced from the MTC alone.

  • SourceRecord heat, plate number and certificate reference.
  • CutMap each nest position to a piece mark.
  • PreserveKeep identity through later surface operations.
04 · Fabrication duties

Assign Welding and Final Inspection Separately

The fabricator's approved design and welding procedure determine joint preparation, welding controls and finished-component inspection. A steel order can name plate grade, delivery condition, source tests and marking, but it does not approve a weld procedure, structural design or completed assembly. If an outside processor cuts or prepares edges, identify that party and the acceptance point for its work. Record the plate surface and dimensions at receipt before cutting changes them. Later weld or distortion questions can then be compared with material records and process evidence at the right handoff.

  • MaterialSource confirms plate and documented tests.
  • CuttingNamed processor owns blank and edge results.
  • WeldingFabricator owns approved procedure and final acceptance.
05 · RFQ and receipt

Send a Plate-to-Piece RFQ and Receipt Plan

Send the approved drawing, product standard and edition, grade, delivery condition, parent plate and finished blank dimensions, quantity, cut allowance, requested tests, certificate, mark-transfer method, surface and edge condition, packing and destination. Request the quote to identify the actual source, any optional processing partner and exclusions. At receipt, compare the heat and plate marks, certificate, thickness, dimensions, surface and count with the order before nesting. Keep the cut-piece map and any design-approved material change with the job record so a later component can be traced without guessing.

  1. Specify

State grade, condition, plate and blank sizes.

  2. Trace

Agree heat-to-piece marking and document transfer.

  3. Receive

Verify plate and certificate before cutting.
